Default Cruise control works for me :)

So in the last 2500 miles since May (2009) I've had 47 mpg with cruise control and A/C and these miles consisted 75% of highway driving at 74 mph or so, 23% of into and out-of the city driving and about 2% of driving in Baltimore City.

Here is why Cruise Control works for me:

1) At that speed I prefer to have all my attention devoted to the road and mostly other drivers.

2) At that speed the useful techniques suggested for highway driving yield only minimal improvements mostly because of aerodynamic issues.

3) At that speed I save about 10 minutes per one-way one hour trip

As a disclaimer I will say that the times I travel are non-rush hour. And I think tailgating at 55 and 65 mph is far more dangerous than driving properly at 76 mph.

I agree. I prefer a steady speed, keeping my eyes on the road (esp. during rush hours), instead of the speedometer. Speeding up and slowing down creates snags in the traffic flow and big tight groupings of cars.
