Well, my Seaside Pearl, #6 just arrived. What a beauty. Considering that the dealer (Carmax - Laurel, MD) told me to expect to wait 3-6 months, I'm so delighted that it arrived in under 4 weeks.

This car is truly an extraordinary experience. It will probably take weeks to learn everything about the system, particularly the MFD and NAV system.

While riding around in it today, I noticed that after the audio screen (showing the radio stations for the selected band) is displayed for a while, the screen automatically reverts to the Energy Monitor. Although there may be many times when I would want the system to default to the Energy Monitor and automatically go back to that screen, there are other times when I would want to retain the audio screen. Is there a way to override or suppress this automatic display of the Energy Monitor?

In the meanwhile, I'll just have to immerse myself in this Owner's Manual. I've got lots to ready today.

Hi RichardBarth

and WELCOME to Prius ownership.!!

Page 152: 2004 Owner's Manual provides instruction on controlling AUTOMATIC TRANSITION from Audio or Air Conditioner settings - automatic transition back to the previous screen. You can set automatic transition to ON or OFF. My Prius came with "ON" as the default.

Should be about the same page in your '05 Manual in "OPERATION OF INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS" chapter.

Your Owner's Manual has a wealth of useful information. A bit hard to read, and not very well indexed. I read the entire manual, highlighted items which I believed would be needed from time to time, and jotted down the page numbers inside the back cover.

You can change it so that radio and climate control do not revert to Nav/Energy. I am not sure the menu, but please try "display/settings" or "info/screen"--I think it is one of those, or something similar. You will see an option to turn this off.

Thanks. That did it. I was so excited with the car I didn't ahve time to read the manual. Now that I've spent some time reading portions of it, it's quite obvious that the translator didn't know English very well. There are tons of grammar errors in there, to the extent that, at times, it's difficult to know what the intended meaning is. Yes, the manual(s) have tons of detail in them, but still not easy to follow. I think it would have been nice if they included a VCR tape with a demo of the NAV system. There is so much there and if you've never used one before, it's quite a learning experience.

Again, thanks for the reply.

Agreed, that is a great idea. Maybe a DVD. Either way, you have a great idea.

The following is a link for a NAV tuturial for the Lexus. It's nearly identical to the Prius NAV system

My father suggested a DVD called Prius For Dummies.

There's a user guide at http://john1701a.com/ that's easier to understand. As Charles Suitt said, the owner's manual is a wealth of information.

Welcome RichardBarth, it's good to see other Maryland Prius owners on this board. PriusChat also contains a wealth of information you might be interested in like:

Turning off the backup or the seatbelt warning beepers

Changing the way the Smart Key System opens the doors

Improving the sound quality of the radio by disconnecting the center speaker

Overriding the NAV system lockout without adding a switch
