A brake light switch might malfunction, causing brake lights to become inoperative or to come on and stay on. This could lead to a crash without warning.

What's your point? This isn't a VW forum.

It took about 20 minutes for the service department to change out mine.

I have replaced mine on a 2000 Jetta--Twice in 6 years, expensive and a pain when you have to be towed because of this little part....Now I drive a PRIUS and not one problem the 1st year (14,000 miles) unlike my old Jetta which was in the shop 3 times in the 1st year, but a great car to drive none the less.....

My point is, there have been quite a few VW discussions on this forum. I just traded a New Beetle for a Prius.

There is a current comparison discussion. Some of us think VW has reliability issues.

Some folks own other cars besided Prius. It might be useful info in getting their VW in for the recall.

Take from it what you will.

If you don't like it skip the post.

Peace

The # of recalls for a manufacturer or model has little to no correlation to reliability.

VW has relatively few recalls if you lookup various models at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems...ecallsearch.cfm. But, they have consistenly terrible reliability ratings in JD Power (http://www.jdpower.com/press-release...spx?ID=2006133) and Consumer Reports over the years. You can see this if you look at their annual April auto issue or have an online subscription. Without it, you can see numerous VWs have made the least reliable column at http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/pr...e-used-cars.htm and http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/pr...le-new-cars.htm. None have made it in the most reliable column.

My guess is that they're end up under the radar of NHTSA by virtue of getting few safety related complaints since they sell so few vehicles in the US. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic.../705020411/1148
