DVD DL media to duplicate NAV 6.1 DVD

I asked this before with "mixed" replies.... half replied with DVD +R DL and other half said DVD -R DL. I did an extensive "search" and still, out of all the threads, found no positive answers.

I want to make a good working "copy" of the original (2007) VERSION 6.1 NAV DVD and store my original in a safe and "cool" place as the temps in a closed Prius here in Florida are sweltering and I'm afraid the original Toyota plastic DVD might get damaged ?? Regardless for my reasons, I want to "duplicate" the version 6.1 on my Dell XPS410 computer using Roxio EMC 9.0 and either the Plextor 755SA DVD "burner" or the OEM Dell (Samsung TSST) burner that came with it ??
PLEASE advise me on the correct media to buy....

Well, if half replied +R and the other half replied -R, then you should be safe with either, becuase it sounds like the DVD drive in the Prius is agnostic in terms of which DVD format it will read.

By the way, how do you like the XPS410? I love mine.

Every Dell that I have ever dealt with that had a DVD burner required + media.

I had a Dell Dimension 9150 (a.k.a. XPS400) running RAID1 (two 160 G HD's for a year and decided to give that to my Wife in Feb. '07 (to replace her three year old Dimension 4700) and I bought a new XPS410 (a.k.a. Dimension 9200) for myself, just as MS Windows Vista was being introduced. The XPS410 was ordered from Dell factory with two 250 GB HD's (RAID) but only option was RAID0 and I wanted RAID1 (mirror) so I was forced to blow away all O.S. and reinstalled MS Windows VISTA (Home Premium) that actually came with it, (Vista Ultimate N/A at time of initial order), and it was a blessing in disguise as I eliminated all that "trial crap" and "freebie junk" that Dell loads onto all it's computers.

I used to build custom computers, mainly high end SCSI RAID workstations and small Servers back in the 90's when it was "cheaper to build your own"..... now I couldn't even get the parts to build one for even twice the cost of what it is to buy one fully assembled and tested (and warrantied).

Dell has a new computer (XPS210) that is a "really downsized" but powerful little machine, but too small for me (I like to add extra DVD burners, etc.) with no expansion, but still great for space saving area's like banks, etc.

Back to the XPS410.... good value for the money, made with top-of-the-line Intel processor/chipset MoBo's and WD HD's, great design heavy duty chassis and excellent cooling. I added a second DVD "burner".... Plextor 755SA which is supposed to burn even the most difficult DVD DL's etc.

I am Dell certified (but still unemployed.... figure it out) and I also worked in a Dell Call Center (Tampa, FL) for a few months, until they changed my hours from 7AM-4PM M-F to rotten 11AM-8PM Wed. thru Sunday (inclusive) so I quit after they could not offer any sort of "change" for me !!

I added a PLEXTOR 755SA about a week after I bought the XPS410. It was a bit expensive compared to the Lite-On's but is supposed to be "tolerant" and burn even to most difficult DVD DL's, etc. compared to the Dell OEM Samsung (TSST). The Plextor is able to burn either +R -or- -R DVD's !! Roxio Easy Media Creator 9.0 runs pretty well under MS Windows VISTA.

I really need to know what the Toyota NAV "wants to see"........ a +R or a -R Dual Layer DVD ??????????

So much information about Dell computers. Everything except is the hardware compatable with -R or +R.
I think the OP needs to check their Dell Manual for disc compatibility. It will be based on the DVD burning hardware, and has nothing to do with the software burner program. If you don't have the Dell manual, go to dell.com and look it up.

Like I said, if people report having their backups work in either format, then it appears that the Toyota DVD player is format agnostic.

Unfortunatey some of the threads were a bit "dated" and referring to the DVD version 5.1 used in pre-'07, so I want to be 100% sure of the "newer" version 6.1 DVD "duped" compatibility in the '07 !!

I think the version applies to the map update and not the format of the DVD. They would have to make them all compatible anyway...

Like I said in the other topic the Prius should read DVD-R DL just fine if you can burn -R DL. DVD-R DL discs conform to the DVD standard by default and are readable by almost all DVD players even older ones. DVD+R DL discs do not conform to the DVD standard but are close enough that most DVD players should be able to read them but no all do. This is the case of the Prius navigation drive. It cant read a DVD+R DL disc so you have to trick it by setting the book type to DVD-R when you burn. Here is the important part. Your DVD burner AND software MUST support changing the book type when burning DVD+R DL media or the burner must automatically set it its self when burning a DVD-R DL disc. My burner for my car PC is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K05. I was able to burn a DVD+R DL and it automataclly set the book type as DVD-R. This backup worked in my Prius just fine. I havnt tried DVD-R DL discs yet because I dont have any but I think they should work just fine as they are already DVD-R format.

My cheapy E521 Dell burns DVD-R no problem.
