The end of July marked my 3 year anniversary of Prius ownership. A few quick stats on my 2004 Prius:

Miles driven: 36,118 or 12,039miles/yr

Gallons of gas used: 674.9 or 225 gallons/yr or 18.7 gallons/month or 0.616 gallons/day

Cost of fuel: 71 fillups for a total of $1,540.41. Equates to $513.47/yr or $42.79/mo or $1.41/day (avg of $2.28/gallon over 3 years)

Fuel economy: lifetime= 53.5 mpg; best tank= 61.1 mpg; worst tank= 45.6 mpg

Money saved vs a 25 mpg car: $1,757

Avg distance per tank: 509 miles; best = 602 miles

Time saved not stopping for gas so often = 5.9 hours

Emissions reductions: 13,715 lbs of CO2

Maintenance costs: total = $393.79 or $131.26/yr (oil changes and tire rotations mostly)

Very interesting data. It shows, for one thing, that you should not buy a Prius to save money only. The fuel savings vs. a Yaris would have been perhaps $1400 for three years (36,000 miles), with the Yaris being about half the cost of the Prius and maintenance and repairs likely cheaper.

Except you'd often have to take two trips in the Yaris to carry as much as the Prius. So factoring that in, the Prius is way ahead.

But if you think riding in a Yaris is cool, be my guest. At your expense.

Great data, Paul. happy anniversary to you and your Prius. Priapus and I will celebrate our three year anniversary on August 24th. I still haven't figured out what we'll do to celebrate; perhaps dinner and a movie.

The Yaris (& any other non-hybrid) is going to need more mainenance. How long are the brakes going to last on the Yaris? Not as long as the Prius.
