2006. They had the new headlights, the chrome brakelight background, chrome grille, HYBRID badge, updated ECU, new dashboard/door capping material, better speakers, higher res MFD, TPMS, advanced front airbags (i.e. occupant detection system), lowered the rear seat by 1" (supposedly) and new lower front spoiler.
The refresh usually comes in after the 3rd year (so for the 4th and 5th year). The Prius' refresh came after the 2nd year (i.e. on the 3rd year) so it was a year early.
If it does come out as a 2010 model, they're pushing it just like the 9th Gen Corolla (2003-2008 with the refresh for the 2005 MY.. so it went 4 years on that updated styling).

Now if the Prius continues to sell well in its current form, then Toyota might be willing to let it go for another year til the 2010 model. But it also depends on how the other competitors are playing their cards.
[/b]
I don't think that really counts as an ACTUAL refresh the likes Toyota has done on other models ... the car still looks exactly the same. I'm going to stick by my prediction for now.

Thanks for all the info - looks like it might be 1 1/2 years +. Might consider a 2 year lease on one now and turn it it to buy a new one?? Never leased a car before, but now I think it might be worth taking a peak at.

That is a midlife update and that's what it's called.

Here are other examples of changes made in Canada (cause I'm not sure what Toyotas you're thinking of. And besides, does it make sense to you to update the year before a full redesign?)

2002-2006 Camry. 2005/2006 - new headlights, new taillights, new wheel designs, electroluminescent gauges, slightly reworked centre console (below the radio), new steering wheel with audio mounted audio controls

2003-2008 Corolla. 2005-2008 - chrome grille surround, clear rear indicator lights, rear centre headrest, UV cut glass, engine immobiliser. On the LE model, standard foglights, TPMS, Optitron gauges. Opt. side/side curtain airbags. New XRS model

2001-2007 Highlander. 2005-2007 - new headlights, new taillights, 17" wheels on Limited model, new silver trim on base model, silver/wood trim on Limited model.

2001-2005 RAV4. 2004/2005 RAV4 - new door handles, new 2.4 litre engine, new rear taillights, different alloys, new Chili Edition.

1995-2000 RAV4. 1998-2000 - new taillights, new grille, Package C option with colour-keyed bumpers, handles, mirrors

2004-present Avalon. 2008 Avalon - new taillights with LEDs, new grille, new headlights, new front bumper, new alloys

2000-2005 Echo sedan. 2004-2005 - new headlights, new front bumper, new taillights, new rear bumper, new trunklid.

according to my GSM, after going to the sales manager training for the new corolla, sequoia, and matrix, they showed a picture of the new prius on the projector. they were kicking people out taking pics with their cellphones and whatnot, so they were very secretive. He said that it looks wild and will be available early spring '08. who knows though.

I know this is an old post. I just sold my Lexus GS400, and ready to buy new Prius. Should I wait for 2009? I know that the first year will have some minor issues that need to take care of, and dealer probably going to sell it for premium. Realistically, its probably I might have to wait until 2010 to get a decent price. What to do ??????

I'm waiting until the New York Auto Show (late March) before buying.
