Replacement Goodyear Tire Choices

Hi, I am @ 30K miles & it's almost time for new tires on my '06 Prius. I have read many tire posts and opinions vary widely. I will pose my question in a different way.

1) I live in S. FL where there is NO snow, sleet, ice, frozen rain, or any hills or mountains. I drive 95% of all miles in city. I have no problems with how the car handles or rides. I am very satisfied with those areas and get a solid 54.5 MPG lifetime milege. I do NOT want to LOSE ANY MPG.

My question: Is there anyone living in this climate who has replaced the stock tires with a different Goodyear tire and has NOT lost any MPG?? I see G-year has a "Comfortread" tire which I know nothing about. A salesperson won't be interested in how many MPG I get with my car.

I will be forced to put on new stock tires if I can't get any useful info given my specific driving/env. I really don't want another set of tires that only last 30,000 miles. I want tires that will last at least 60,000 miles or more. I don't care about anything except keeping the same MPG- (Or more) & how long the tires will last.

Can someone who lives in this area or one like it please help me out? Thank you.

DON'T BUY THE STOCK INTEGRITY TIRES

I live near Ft. Lauderdale and replaced my OEM Goodyear Integrities with Goodyear ComforTreds at 15,000 miles. The OEM's were worn to 5/32 out of 9/32 and were really starting to lose their grip; anyway, I typically change tires way before they get to the 2/32 danger point.

The Comfortreds are quieter, have excellent wet traction, handle better and have a longer tred life. The Integrities are really crap when compared to the Comfortreds. But, you will take a normal new tire hit of around 4MPG, which after a 2,000 mile break in will will settle in to a permanent 2MPG loss.

I have 30,000 miles on my Comfortreds that are now at 5/32 and they're showing no signs of poor handling; I plan to replace them with another set of Comfortreds at 35,000 miles. I know Goodyear claims a 60,000 mile tredlife for the Comfortreds, but I do a lot of high speed driving at 40/38 psi on our hot highways paved with lots of tire killing traction stuff like sea shells, etc. and I don't get good tred life with anything.

I buy my tires from Tire Rack. The Prius stock size 185/65-15 Comfortreds cost $78 each. If you buy a set by 4/5/08, you get a $40 Goodyear rebate, which more than pays for the shipping charges; they do not charge sales tax. Get them installed at your Toyota dealer to avoid damaging your tire pressure monitor system; my dealer charged me $48 to mount and balance all 4. With my next set of tires, Im going to add a Nitro-fill for an additional $40.

I've read a bunch of the threads too, and am curious as to why there aren't more definitive answers to some of these questions. However, your case should be an easy one. If you are satisfied with the Integrities, and it sounds as though you are other than perhaps the service-life aspect of them, consider simply replacing them with another set of Integrities for now. The fact that they may only last 30K miles might be a mild bummer, but consider the possibility that in a couple of years there just might be an 'improved' high-mileage tire that is consistently a 'best performer' on the Prius. Just a thought.....

Yes, Now I know that I will lose 2 MPG if I buy the Comfortreads. I guess the stock tires will be my choice. I do almost no high speed driving as 95% of my Prius's milege is city. Thanks.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring $65.00 (80,000)

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring H/V $70.00 (does not say)

BF Goodrich Traction T/A (88T) $80.00 (70,000)

All these are cheaper than comfortred's and higher mileage warranties

also seen the goodyear viva's do very good on the rolling resistance charts...

I live in Northern Michigan, which certainly isn't Southern California or Florida. We switched tires before our first winter; the OEM tires are simply not up to our snowy winters. We went with Micheline MXV4+ Energy low rolling resistance all-season tires in the same size as the OEMs. They have worked great for us: better handling, traction, and less road noise. The mileage has been the same. Micheline updated the tire since we bought ours, and now call it the MXV4 Primacy, or something to that effect.

Many other people on PC have reported good luck with Nokian WR-Gs, but I have no experience with them.

The mileage has been the same. Micheline updated the tire since we bought ours, and now call it the MXV4 Primacy, or something to that effect.

I was considering this tire for replacement as early as next month with our stock Integrities just barely getting to 20K. In the past I've used this tire on a Volvo S60 AWD but was wondering if they have a special designation within the model as "low rolling resistance" or if that is the defacto characteristic of the tire?

Hi All, I wanted to thank everyone who replied to my inquiry about replacement tires. Today I ordered a set of the original Integrity tires from Sam's Club. The cost per tire was $65.38 and Sam's offers a complete tire package covering everything for only $8.50 per tire. There was no shipping charge and I shop there frequently.

Out of all the replies I got only one person mentioned how the MPG was affected by their tire choice. That person said he/she lost 2 miles per gallon by selecting another Goodyear tire. I have been satisfied with the stock tires and I did not want to lose any mileage with another tire so I feel I made a good choice based on your feedback in my experience. Once again, thank you all for your feedback.

Keep in mind that your mileage may suffer briefly and temporarily until the new tires are "broken in".
