Have you replaced your hybrid battery?

I was wondering how many folks have had to replace the hybrid battery on their Prius? I'm especially interested to learn if their are any differences in the battery's life and the year of the Prius.

So in addition to your poll vote, could you please list your

-Year of car
-Mileage when battery died
-how much the new battery cost you (warranty, dealer paid half, etc)

2004 with 131,000 miles - the HV battery and the 12v are both doing fine. Traction battery failures in an NHW20 (2004+) have been rare.

There've been only a handful of 2G Prius batteries replaced, but a number of 1G have been. The stats here are not likely to be highly representative of the world at large.

I have only seen 1 instance of a Gen 2 (04 +) battery failing. It was replaced under warranty, but the dealer gave the person a difficult time of it because they had the EV mod.

I have seen a few instances of Gen 1 batteries failing, mostly on PTS (Prius Technical Stuff) Yahoo discussion group.

There were design changes to the battery cells that should make the Gen 2 batteries more robust than the Gen 1 batteries.

Hi All,

That denied warranty thread was for a mountain driven Prius, where there was a hill in the Stage 1 area. In stage 1, the battery is used almost 100 percent, and its most likely at low charge from the previous driving. In such situations, waiting a minute parked, but in "ready" would help. It would get the car out of stage 1 warmup, and allow the engine to be used for power the car up the hill.
