Default How does the Prius Transmission work?

I know the prius doenst use a traditional transmission, but a variable something something. Can someone explain how the prius transmission differs from a traditional vehicle? I just got my prius and want to be as informed about it as possible when I show my friends. =) thanks

The transmission essentially has a single gear and never shifts. One gets the feeling that some shifting is taking place but this is due to varying ICE revolutions and thus engine noise.
