Default 2004 Prius compatible with later model MFD units?

My MFD failed on me last week due to the dreaded "Check Air Conditioner Connection" problem. Rather than solder the pins, I've decided to just go ahead and purchase a replacement unit. I have a 2004 Prius non navigation. What MFD units will work with my car? Thanks.

2004 and 2005 will work. In 2006 Toyota changed the resolution of the MFD. However, I think the non-NAV units in the 2006+ are the same as the '04 and '05 MFD.

Thanks, can anyone else please confirm? I am about to buy a replacement unit and want to make sure it is indeed compatible.

What year is the replacement unit you're looking at?

My MFD failed in my 2004. My mechanic located a 2006 (non-nav) MFD and put it in but it did not work. (He didn't charge me for this.)
He then located a 2005 and it did work.
There is a thread on PC about the MFD failure and what will and won't work in the 2004.

Thanks homersparkey! Can you link me to that thread? I tried sifting through the pages in the main MFD problem thread but could not find it.

I heard that the "non fan" 2006 MFD Prius units with small plugs will work. Can anyone give more details regarding this?

Thread's name is "MFD issues on '04/'05 Prius". Reply #11 about says it all.
Only 2004 or 2005 MDF will work in a 2004.

(I'm not good at doing links )

I actually heard that 2006 Prius MFD units without cooling fans will work.
