Brake Actuator Pump Noise

I have a 2007 Prius. Now that the cold weather is coming back so is the grinding noise some of us experience with the brake actuator pump.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin about it that states 'the vehicle exhibits a squeak-type noise when pressing or releasing the brake pedal'. However, that's not the noise I have. Mine makes a grinding noise when starting the car on a cold morning or after it is parked for a couple of hours. Sometimes when pressing the brake pedal as well.

I have discussed my noise with a senior toyota tech at my dealership. He told me replacing the actuator pump under the current TSB would correct the grinding noise I get as well.

So my question is to folks who have had the brake actuator replaced: Did you also get a grinding noise on cold startup as well as pressing the brake pedal? And did replacing the actuator assembly solve the issue?

I'm very interested to see what you find out as we have the same issue on both of our 2009s. The brake pump makes a soft grinding noise every time the car is started and about every other time the brake is used.

I am surprised that the dealer stated the noise is covered by the TSB. Does that mean it will be resolved or replaced free of charge?

The TSB I mentioned only covers '04-'07 Prius, as far as I know. Also, the soft grinding noise you hear may be the coolant pump returning coolant to the engine upon startup. Are you sure its the brake pump?

In any case, I will report the results of my repair to this thread.

This is a follow-up to my original post. I had the brake actuator pump replaced this past Monday, Nov. 9... and it didn't correct the noise I get on startup. It must be something else, but what else will only make a grinding noise on cold startup except a pump or bearing?

Does anyone else hear a grinding noise on cold startup? It would really help if I can get some opinions from fellow Prius owners.
