If that extended warranty you're talking about is the Toyota Extra Care Platinum Plan, it has a MSRP of $1850, and is available here on PriusChat through Troy Dietrich/WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield, MA for the discounted price of $1055. You have until 36 months or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) to get the extended warranty. I strongly suggest that you wait until 35 months or 35,000 miles (whichever comes first) to make the decision. That way you will be better informed as to (1) whether you think you might need the extended warranty to justify its cost, and (2) which extended warranty to get in terms of maximum years or miles -- note that you can save hundreds more off that $1055 discounted price if you elect an extended warranty with fewer maximum years and/or miles, as may be appropriate for your driving usage. Here's the thread about the Toyota extended warranties and prepaid maintenance plans available at a discount on PriusChat (it's a "Sticky" thread that you would have easily found if you had used the Forum's "Search" function or checked out the Forum's list of thread titles): Discounted Toyota Prius Extended Warranty /Service Contracts * * * * * * * Please learn to use the Forum's "Search" function in its different permutations, as well as the Forum's lists of thread titles. If you do, you'll often find that your questions have already been answered.

Friends: 2 | I basically don't believe in buying an extended warranty for any product. First of all, you are dealing with an insurance product. Nobody sells insurance to loose money. In fact, there usually is a large commission on these policies. That means that on average, you will be ahead by not buying an insurance policy. What happens if you happen to be the unlucky one, and get hit with a big repair bill? The first question is, if that happens, can you afford it? If the answer is yes, then in the long run, you will be better off not buying the insurance. You really need insurance where if something goes wrong you could be wiped out financially. So, you need car insurance, liability at least, unless you are very very rich, then you can be self insured. Collision coverage is not necessarily needed, but for most people, at least until the car is a few years old is worth while. You can save a lot though by getting a high deductible, $1000. You can check, you will save the $500 difference between the premiums that you would have to shell out in a few years, so odds are you are paying the $500 anyway, just slowly. If you don't have accidents, you waste your money. If it is the other persons fault, you will eventually get all the money if the other person has insurance. (Sorry about getting off topic) Anyway, save your money, you will have more at the end of the day. Last edited by vertex; 08-12-2009 at 11:40 PM. Reason: typo |
