As described in this thread, I am looking to do some testing to compare pulse and glide with steady speed driving. After several frustrating attempts to capture data from multiple sources nearly simultaneously (ScanGauge, trip odometer, MFD, and stopwatch), record them on an audio recorder, and still drive precisely in accordance with the test protocol, I have decided that I'd like to find an inexpensive data logging device, preferably less than $100, that I can use with my laptop.

I found a couple of OBDII-to-PC devices in that price range on the web. One that caught my attention is the ProScan. Is anyone familiar with it? Has anyone used this or similar scan tool? Any other suggestions?

You have a Scangauge? If so, very soon they will offer a data logging output. I think they quoted me $100 for the upgrade.

Be aware, many outputs you may want to monitor are CANBUS messages, which can not be viewed with OBDII only. You may want to consider the cables used with the Japanese computer program discussed in this area of the forum.

If you already owned a SG, $100 upgrade is way better than spending another $160 for a new Scantool such as proscan. I will pay for $100 upgrade to have logging capabilities.

If you compare both products, you find SG have LCD display. It will display some missing gauge for the Prius. For proscan, you will need to invest for a portable laptop, which is extras.

I have a ScanGauge I, and it presumably won't have the data logging ability that SGII will have. Having said that, if I knew that feature was soon to arrive, I would wait. I agree that's a good option, and that would move me to upgrade the SG, testing aside. But I've been hearing about it for months now, still with no launch date announced.

David Beale, is this the thread you're referring to? I saw that after I posted this -- not sure how I missed it during my search -- and I haven't had time to digest all the posts and links.

Chinalfr2, I already have the laptop.

JimboK, how do you know if SGI do not have data logging ability? Even with SGII, I haven't heard about the data logging capability. I just so to read it on this thread when David Beale post it. Data logging feature on SG is new to me.

You're right, I don't know. I just figured they would not offer an upgrade for an obsolete product. If they take months or years to release it, it's a moot point for me anyway.

That's the thread.
When I purchased my SGII last summer they assured me they would have the logging capability out in a month. Right! I think I heard somewhere they are having trouble with the software.

A little more searching the web for ProScan found this forum with mostly negative remarks about customer service. So that's out. Any other suggestions?
