Nope. It's Windows CE. After extracting the Kiwi (kwi) navigation files shows the different 'platforms' it's compiled for. It's similar to the Mitsubishi MMCS.

It will undoubtedly be some embedded system pared down to do the
tasks it does without general-purpose OS fluff, likely built around
one of the development systems / kernels mentioned. I hadn't seen
this thread yet but you can certainly get a look at how the MFD is
constructed in the page I put together last week. I've also jotted
down some chip numbers [which you probably can't see from the pix]
and was going to try looking some of them up, but I think we'll find
that it's a lot of proprietary stuff or fpgas and uCs whose
programming you don't have a copy of. No, this probably doesn't
help much.

I couldn't help but ask - what kind of camera do you use for the photos you have on this page, and what settings? I'm still yearning to get closeups with that clarity from my Canon 30D.

So does the Prius have the same nav system? I'm still thinking that some part of the car runs QNX, per what QNX says.

Y'know, I was going to comment on that lithium cell in the page but
never banged in the text. Presumably it's for some of the config
memory, like what color you set the screen. Maybe some stored diag
codes. But on the face of it, the MFD doesn't have to remember a
whole lot of data itself, it just queries the car.

I've looked at the Prius LOADING.KWI, and I don't see any references to Windows CE like in the Mitsubishi example. The executable LOADING file has a different format than the other KWI data files. See section 30 of the standard. The modules contained in this file can be for any binary platform.

Forgot to mention the camera stuff, since it was asked. Sony DSC-V1
point-n-shoot but I usually have it in full manual for this stuff,
usually using the self-timer for better stability and/or if I need
to get my hand back into the shots. 5.1 Mp, and usually reduced
to 1024x768 which actually helps clean up noise a little bit, and
then minimal postprocessing for contrast and sharpness.
.
This camera does *not* have great closeup, i.e. no macro... best
it can do is .1 meter and I can't zoom in too far or the focus
range goes all wacko. So for the really tight stuff I often
crop the relevant piece out of the original and gain a magnification
effect that way.
.
It does okay, but I wouldn't mind better battery life, taller zoom
and possibly sharper glass ... so I'm considering going shopping
again soon.

i could make some really uneducated guesses, but i'd do better to ask, "what would the car need to keep stored in RAM if all external dc power [drive and basic 12v system] supplies were disconnected?

mileage? sorry, i AM guessing here... black box info? VIN number? legal stuff?

your turn...

Unless it's stored somewhere else, the MFD does store lot of data: telephone book, stored navigation locations and preferences, plus the A/C settings and various reminder settings (which I don't find all that useful).

Right, the KWI is simply the container. However, the files and their formats within the file are compiled against a specific architecture. When, if I-5 re-opens, I ever get back to my car, I'll double check the kwi file.

I actually started using manual focus more often, and now I'm getting pictures that look damn close to yours - I have a Canon EOS 30D. Battery life is awesome - even with auto-shutoff, I can keep it on for 1-2 weeks at a time before the battery drains.
