Does anybody know if changing the radio out without going through the dealer will void the factory warranty?

The standard answer to this question is that Toyota must demonstrate that your mods caused the problem. Hence, they would undoubtedly not agree to repair an aftermarket stereo, and perhaps the associated wiring--say, if the steering wheel control buttons stopped working.

I'm in the works on building a sound system. I have a Gen III - 2 with stock head unit.
There is really no space for anything larger for the front and rear speakers after taking a look. The fronts are 6x9's and the rears 6x5 or 6x3.
The fronts really don't have any space and needs some modifications for sure and the stock speakers are rivited on the frame so it needs to be ripped off. I haven't opened up the rear side but I predict it to be the same. Space is going to be an issue with the interior speakers for sure.
The head unit should fit most double dins easily. Just need to either wait on a dash kit to be released or I am going to fabricate one with a friend of mine who ownes a stereo shop.
Planning on a JL 10 inch sub for the rear and also a 4 ch. amp to run the other speakers.
Don't know what head unit I'm going to us yet but I have always used Pioneer so probably go that route.
Carputer is also in the works with a Mac Mini system and a touch screen monitor installed on the upper glove box with the monitor custom fitted on the glove box cover.

I will definitly post the installation process as I start.

I'm also looking at aftermarket GPS systems for my future Prius. Seems like many people are unhappy with the factory unit: older features, not able to operate while driving, USB/iPod connection/compatibility not so great, price tag, no DVD playback, etc. Crutchfield has two units that are suppose to fit: Clarion NZ409 for $800 and Dual XDVDN8190 for $600. Both are listed as "modified fit" and come with a free back up camera. Best Buy lists the Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT for $1600 as compatible. Has anyone put one of these units, or another GPS unit, in their 2010 Prius?

Best Buy claims 2-3 months also for a generic insert

In addition to the Clarion, there are a few interesting ones in the EBay world (from a cost and feature standpoint - who knows what the sound will be like)... They seem to all be from Korea/China...

Key features:
* Back up camera (just add a $40 CCD cam and you have nice backup solution - I personally hate the rear visibility)
* IPOD - Careful with this one - I talked with a rep at EONON, and they do not support IPhone OS 3.0 - only IPODs
* GPS - most have a speed sensor for tunnels etc *but* they run some funkier NAV software. Since this is WINCE 5.0, there should be a way to load TomTom onto the SD card - EONON was not sure...
* Steering button interface - they claim it works - not sure about pinout or connections yet...
* Bluetooth - has external mic that can be located wherever, support for A2DP...
* DVD etc - with Dolby digital (4 channel+sub)
* Preamp outputs (for external amps - they all run around 22wRMS, 50 peak)
* 480x230 resolution - one claims 800x480!
* Digital TV or Gaming system - or both as AUX interfaces
* USB
* SD memory (for maps, music etc - I believe the max supported is 4G
* Dual zones for Video (meaning you can add a rear video with DVD while front is running GPS).

All this sounds cool - and priced in the $300 - $500 range.

Support will not be great, but I can live with it... Anyone else play with these things?????????

The company Scosche who makes high quality dash kits confirmed they will have a dash kit out for our cars in November. I know it's a little ways away still, but will be worth the wait for something that looks good and fits nicely. The Metra brand I believe is what it's called is cheap crap. Don't know when they intend on having their kits out for our cars, but if it's sooner I'd wait for a much better piece. Good luck with your installs and i almost wish I had a Prius II so this stereo install I've been dealing with wouldn't have been such a pain.
