Sorry man, work has been keeping me busy. The back of the box is done. I gotta cut a subwoofer mounting ring from MDF. Mount it and then fiberglass it into the front. It will come. Suppose to have this weekend off, so will see what progress I can make.

would changing the door speakers alone improve the sound quality?

and how much an improvement?

Question regarding swapping speakers for a non-JBL system:

If I'm swapping 6x9" in the front door, what do you with the dash mounted squawkers? Are they simply disconnected? Is the signal going to the 6x9" full range or is there a crossover somewhere? I'm curious because it makes no sense to drop in a full range 3 way 6x9" coaxial speaker if the signal is midrange.

For those who have upgrade to component speakers:

Where have you mounted your tweeters? I'm not keen on custom molded panels for the A-pillars. Can't they just go where the squawkers are? Surface mount is okay but I'd like to see some easy flush mounts.

I've looked at this a bit {IMHO} you really should have something up front. If you look back a bit, I took some pics, and you should be able to put a 3" in the space of the squaker. I believe you'll almost get more from that than the 6x9 - but they should be done as a pair...

Crutchfield has a matched pair (1" and 6x9 Clarion SRP6920M Platinum Series 6"x9" component system at Crutchfield.com ) for like $80 on sale (off brand - but should be good). Your other choice is to find a 6x9 and 3" with similar sensitivities - and get a passive cross-over - when I upgrade, I'll go that route... I found a new head unit does make even the cheap speakers sound OK.

You really should get a 3" up front - it will take a bit of surgery - but it will be worth it in the long run...

Keep in mind - if they aren't loud enough (sensitivity), you are talking external amps...

Thanks rrolff for the reply. But I'm missing something here......If I put in a 3" driver in the squawker location, I still need a separate tweeter right? The 3" is more like a midrange. And then maybe a separate bass driver in the 6x9" door location? Or is the 3" a 2way-coaxial speaker?

And the Crutchfield Clarion example you gave me: Does the 1" tweeter go in the squawker location?
