Default Oil filter cartridge for 2010...

I am a DYI guy that changes his own oil. I know the new 2010 oil filter is a cartridge... I tried to see where I could get them online and did not come up with anything... Are they available other than from toyota... I usually use the MOBIL 1 oil filters... Is there a M1 compatable cartridge?

No, ExxonMobil has been slow to introduce high efficiency cartridge filters as there has been little demand for them. A lot of the vehicles that use the cartridge filters are probably still under warranty. Therefore, there will be little demand for a long-life filter cartridge as many owners will not do extended drains until their warranty expires.

You can purchase a Genuine Toyota cartridge filter for $4.60/each, shipped:

GENUINE TOYOTA, SCION (10) CARTRIDGE OIL FILTERS A6:eBay Motors (item 280276594920 end time Jun-10-09 08:21:52 PDT)

So... The cartridge should only be changed, how often?

BTW - thanks for the info!

I too like to change my own oil and filter. I see we will be using a cartridge filter. There is nothing wrong with that. My Mercedes filter is a cartridge type. I change that topside and I prefer the cartridge type.

What kind of oil does it call for? Do we have an indicator as to when it needs to be changed? I would sure hope so. My rule is that I change oil at 7,500 miles, which is less than what the Drivers Information Display says.

4500 miles will trigger a maintenance soon indication. 5000 miles will trigger the "Perform Oil Maintenance" notification. Owner can reset this w/ a procedure in the manual.

The covers @ the bottom and the rearward location of the filter may make this a dealer task for a bit though.

It should be changed at every oil change. An oil change, tire rotation and visual inspection should be performed every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first.

The required oil is SAE 0w-20. Currently, 0w-20 can be formulated entirely with Group III basestocks or a mixture of Group II/IV basestocks.

Toyota sells 0w-20 at the dealership, but the most common over-the-counter 0w-20 is sold by ExxonMobil. Mobil 1 0w-20 AFE is a full synthetic oil that will meet all requirements for the Prius. You can find it at most auto parts stores for $6.99/qt.
