Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY640 - Toyota 64mm Oil Filter Wrench

I think a 65mm that you can find in most auto stores, as well as your local Toyota dealer, would work, but this is the right tool....
The oil change is a straight-forward deal, easy even, & this 'How to' is a good guide........
So whats the official word on this...Is it a 64mm or 65mm? I'm guessing that your saying 65mm would work but probably strip out if the housing is on too tight?

Somewhere before step 9 (secure access door) you might want to add (it should be obvious, but for the sake of completeness) "replace oil pan drain plug".

Also - step 10 talks about checking tightness of the oil filter housing and drain plug - can that be done after the access door is put back, or should the order of those two steps be reversed?

Overall an excellent guide! Now I just have to wait to get my GenIII to try it out on...

The cap is a 64mm...not readily available. This nugget of info was gleaned from reading the 2 or 3 concurrently running 'Oil change' or 'Oil change interval' threads here.
I never tried a 65mm, so I don't know if it would slip or not....
But in those same threads there are posts from people who have....
and it looks like Mr Bill might have used one also....

Can you tell me if the cap you bought is metal or plastic? I looked at the link, and it looks like metal, but I'm not sure. I've had bad luck with plastic oil filter wrenches in the past, as they usually start slipping for me. I prefer the metal.

Thanks for the info.

The 64mm socket is availible from Toyota for ~$25 and its made of thick aluminum which should last forever.

You can get this item several places, I took the easy way out and just ordered it from Amazon.

It's sturdy aluminum...will last a lifetime.
The 2 Toyota dealers I visited looking for it had no idea of it's existance....surprising huh?
Couldn't find one at Advance or AutoZone either....altho all 3 places had an inexpensive 65mm wrench that probably would work....
You'll need a 24mm socket for the stud on the wrench, and you're good to go............

Where do you buy your filters and plug washers?

Usually the plug washers are good for a long time, if not over torqued. I plan on picking up an extra at the dealership though.
