Default My first servcie after 6 weeks and over 5000 miles

I don't know if anyone put more miles in just 6 weeks than me. Since August 18 delivery, I drove my Prius over 5000 miles by early October. At this rate, I will put over 40,000 miles a year !!!
I sent Prius in for her first oil change last Sat at Tustin Toyota. It's so new that the service advisor and mechanic have not worked on a 2010 Prius yet. The young mechanic even came out to chat with me about the car. He said the oil was so clean and looked like fresh oil. He then said other than few oild changes, Prius is pretty much a maintenance free vehicle. He has not seen or known any electric motor and battery failures so far. Just some professional comments you may want to know.

I'm now driving close to 1K per week, so yes I do drive over 5K in 6 weeks. That's why I'm particularly frustrated with the 5K oil change interval by Toyota, when all evidence shows that 10K would be just fine. How much did you pay for your 5K service?

With the 0W-20 oil without tire rotation (I get it done at Discount Tire), I paid $69. Next time, I will bring Amsoil 0W-20 (with 25K per year warranty) to get the dealer to replace once a year like I always done with all my other vehicles.

This was discussed somewhere else, so not sure if you know about it or not, but if you do not follow the Toyota oil change interval, you may void your warranty in case of engine problems. Last Saturday, when visiting the dealer for the oil change, I asked that same question to the dealer and he said that an engine failure/malfunctioning is a rare event in their shop, but if it happens, the first thing they check is if the oil change interval has been done as recommended. Just an FYI...

In addition to Indyking's note, I would also highly suggest gradually running up to those longer OCIs while performing oil analysis. I've heard of more than one engine failure while attempting to run out to 25k mi on Amsoil without proper monitoring.

Now, if you go a year and only 10k miles in a year, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Yeah, it rarely ever happens in today's engine. If it does, Amsoil is the warranty provider. I haven't tried how good their warranty is and hope I never will.

Mine goes in tomorrow. I reminded the Svc Mgr, that he was going to use OW20 oil, right? And, you are not going to over fill it, right? He laughed and acknowledged that they now knew to use the right oil and such. I didn't ask him what the bill was going to be though.

I just wonder how you're going to handle the oil change warning in the MID in your Prius... just ignore it I guess. I can't ignore it. Those warnings to me always sound like "do it before it is too late"...

Also, I would like to see the look in the face of the service person when he/she finds out that the car has not changed oil for 25K miles...

MID? I reset the warning message (pressing the mile/km bottom and the Start button at the same time or something like that) once it came up and continued my happy miles with my own schedule 10K or 25K miles. I did the 5K oil change only because it's the first oild after break-in. I have used 1 year oil (Amsoil and Mobil 1 Extended) for over 10 years on all of my vehicles. The oldest one is a 13 years old supercharged 4Runner with over 180K miles and still runs strong as new. Just my experience.
