I believe Ipod has its own tech. Any MP3 player can be used via the aux port. But it can't be controlled like the Ipod as mentioned above.

The USB functionality allows you to connect a USB device, and control it through the car. So with a USB thumb drive for example, you should be able to navigate through the file structure (artist/album/track, for example).

I'd imagine it would also work with a USB enabled MP3 player, although who knows if there are proprietary controls in the MP3 player that would preclude this.

I "might" splurge for the USB upgrade if a self-installed price is <$299. I have a couple of Sansa's I could try to validate the theory. Worst case, they're viewed as mass storage devices with the MP3's played from the head unit.

I believe Doug mentioned iPod and Zune in the chat thread though as compatible devices.

yeah, if your usb mp3 player does support being seen as usb storage device (and most do) then thats the way it will work... there is no special way to control mp3 players.

but easiest way is sto simply get 8 GB USB stick, which is now extremly cheap and simply drag and drop your music there... simple, effortless and cheap!

I would recommend a high speed memory stick at 8+GB. Waiting for the car to index the music on a slower device would be a painful experience each time the car was started (unless there's some persistence in the "RAM" of the head unit).

I have a slower Corsair 16GB (cheap after rebate), and the thing is ungawdly slow compared to smaller devices.

Does anyone have a guess if the iPod can be controlled via Voice Command similar to the Ford Sync? I.E. you can tell the Nav Artist and Track names, instead of scrolling through the thousands upon thousands of songs you have on your iPod.

Never tried lol. I know it will work for discs but I don't know about iPods and folders.

So do we know FOR SURE that we can add the iPod/USB intergration later if we buy a '10 before September? Hope I'm making myself clear ... I guess I just want to make sure if I buy right away can it be added after it comes out so that it's exactly as it'd be from the factory after September?

Yes, but only for the Nav units. This is a quote from Doug Coleman (Prius Team) from another thread:

"Just to be clear, the accessory iPod adapter will only be available on Prius II (base audio system). The September USB/iPod adapter will only be on Navigation systems. The non-Navi JBL audio will not have a USB/iPod adapter."
