Default The V.I.P. RS 3200 Plus Security System--pros & cons

I know that the Prius comes equipped with a security system standard. I'm no security expert, but it seems to me to be adequate to deter theft.

What I would like to know is what you think of the optional security system at the MSRP price.

Is it mostly a dealer profit center for those obligated to buy it; or is there a good argument for actually purchasing the system upgrade. Please let me hear your pros/con thoughts.

The 2010 Prius does *NOT* come with a security system standard - only an engine immobilizer.

There's a fair amount of markup in the VIP system, however it's a port installed option, not a dealer installed option (well, it could be, but at a much higher cost). Despite that, I went for it anyway as it does include glass break, hood switch, etc, and it's integrated w/ the car vs. a third party fob hack.

I'm pondering weather to get the VIP security system on my pending B-pearl 2010. What do you actually get with the additional security system? From what I've read you get noise & blinking lights when the glass breaks or someone tries to jimmy the door. Do people pay much attention to car alarms going off anymore?

Engine immobilzation, panic switch, remote lock & unlock, auto door locking are standard. Do people find this sufficient? What am I missing here?

HTMLspinnr - Thanks for your input. My 2010 came with the security system as a port add on and it wasn't something I would have chosen as an option.

I've been questioning my sanity about writing the check but I feel better now.

Thanks

Funny, I explicitly added mine as a PIO, mostly for the glass break. Never had a car broken into though, and hope this won't be the first.

Can you get a Toyota alarm system installed by the dealer?

Most dealers would be inclined to install "their" system at an additional cost. That being said, the VIP3200 system install doesn't appear to be too difficult after reading the instructions. It does require a scan tool of sorts to configure options on the car to enable it.

yes.

good thing about Toyota system is that it integrates easily with the car... for aftermarket, there is a lot of cutting needed, and heck, did anyone make Prius alarm?

I know that back in the 2006 when I got mine, i was one of the few people who managed to install aftermarket alarm which integrates well.

A word of caution about an after market alarm system!
If a careless or defective install causes a subsequent failure in the vehicle's systems, your Prius or any brand warranty is void. Best to stick with OEM equipment in this case!

For the VIP system - there are a couple of harnesses that plug in in-between some existing plugs to eliminate any cutting or tapping. There are some additional switches (hood switch for one) to be added, and a security light that is installed in one of the button knock-outs next to the steering wheel (where solar switch, LED washer, dimmer, etc. live).

Wish I could say the same for the lighted door sills (those do use Scotch type t-taps).
