So then it is a good safety feature. Is it that annoying to have it disabled? I mean it only beeps for a few seconds when you back up so I would leave function on. I guess I would have to hear it to make that decision.

You can get an orange square to flash around the "R" on the Prius too. Use the same procedure, but instead of letting the air out of the right fronot tire, you let the air out of the left front tire. It is for people who pull over the limit line at a stop light, then back up to let a pedestrian cross and leave the car in "R" by mistake so that when the light changes and they do their jack rabit start, they zoom (Hmmm in Pirus case) into to car behind them.

Don't forget to sneeze 3 times and the twirl exactly 2 seconds after the last sneeze.

My 2007 Australian version does not allow you to disable the beep, and in two years of driving, having the beep has not really bothered me. But then again, it only beeps when I back out of the garage, or into a parking spot - so it only sounds for a short time.

However, I do agree that it would be better if it was on the outside so that others would also hear it and be aware of the reversing car.

I think prius owners would be laughed at if the beeping were outside the car on such a small vehicle. To me when I here beeping outside I figure it is a big truck or van. A beeping hybrid would be funny.

Ironically the reversing beep did not help me remember it was in reverse in the first month or so of owning the car! Had a few near-misses. I think it's that everything else is so automatic, you forget that it doesn't 'know' you now want to pull forward, and change for you!

Now the beeper is just irritating, and there's no documented procedure I'm aware of to turn it off on a European car.

I think that this feature, along with the LKA and the Intelligent Cruise Control are the first steps to allow blind people to drive !

Sounds GOOD to me! But don't tell my wife, she'll want me to do lots of errands for her...and I'd rather play!

It is REALLY annoying. So much so that I personally think its distracting when backing up. Its a "must disable".

Lexus uses a controller based program for making these setting changes that used to be called C-BES and is now Lexus Personalized Settings or (LPS). If Toyota is using something like that now the dealer will have to make the changes. Lexus dealers will give you a printout of all the settings and options and then will make however many changes you want one time for free.
