Friends: 0 | Hey everyone. I bought my 2010 Prius II on 6/30/09. At the time I bought the car for fuel efficiency. Now i find out my company wil pay gas. I wanted a BMW 3 series and I could have gotten a gently used 2007 325I for the same price i spent on ym new prius. It has 900 miles on it, Prius II white pearl. I also bout the 100,000 toyota extended warranty for $1300 and theft protection for $500 and paid all of th sales tax. Msrp was $23,100 plus all of the things I just discussed, i had a good trade so after the roughly $25000+ transaction I owe about 17,000 on the car. If i try to sell it or tade it in, do you think I will get killed??? I dont want to end up throwing away thousands of dollars for nothing, if it doesnt make sense selling it, I will keep it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks |

Friends: 0 | Considering it's only slightly used, has the extended warranty and demand is still pretty good, I'm thinking you could sell it for about $1000 under MSRP...$22,000. If you plan on selling, I would do it now because with gas heading toward $2.00, it probably wont be long before they are selling for a good bit under MSRP. Friends: 5 | Your best bet would be to try and outright sell it to someone. I'm pretty sure you'd take a substantial loss if you traded it in. You've had it for a few weeks, put nearly a thousand miles on it, and the title is in your name. It's not new anymore. If you really want to get rid of it, put an ad in the paper/Craig's List/wherever ASAP. I'm sure someone out there will scoop it up for hopefully not too much of a loss to you...especially if the 2010 Prius is scarce in your area right now. Go talk to the person who sold you the car, and see what amount they'd give you for a trade in. |

Thats good news, I could swallow a $1000 hit, but i wont accept a $5000 hit. I didnt get what i wanted from the toyota dealer for my trader either. If i can sell for $22,000, I would have 5k left to put down on the BMW. If not, ill just keep the car, I do like it. But not exactly me.. so to speak. Ill put it on craigslist and see what happens. If anyone here is interested, I might let it go for 22k. A steal considering the new condition, extended warranty and i already paid sales tax and license for the year. Anyone in the Phoenix/ Tucson market interested. Send me a message. Thanks

Friends: 2 | If you end up getting a gently used 2007, make sure it is certified by BWM and you have the maintenance paid by them. Otherwise repairs on those cars can become quite spendy. I know, I've owned one. |

My analysis is based on the fact that gas seems to have peaked for the summer and prices are now falling. This time last year it started falling and went from ~$4 to ~$2 within 4 months. Of course, you can't use the past to predict the future, but my money is on $2.00 gas by Halloween.

Friends: 0 | I appreciate all of the replies so far.. this forum is awesome. To add to the discussion. Eddie haskel has some great points, I would be much happier in the BMW, its powerfull, super sporty, and luxurious. Everything I want. My main gripes about the prius is the styling, lack luster performance - compared to most cars, and the strange looks and stigma you get from people who judge prius owners, but who cares about them anyway, i bought the car for me, not them. But the styling and performance issues are un deniable. But the prius is great at what it does also, im not trying to compare the two, they are apples and oranges and I see the pros/cons in both. If i cant get the money I am asking for 22-23k, I will happily keep the prius and not look back. I can buy a BMW in 3-5 yrs, after depreciation has taken its toll, and hopefully after several raises, so i can swing the BMW more easily, and deal with the maintainance and repair costs. So I put it on Craigslist Phoenix, and I will see what happens, If someone wants to pay what i want, I will be a BMW owner, if not, I will continue to be a proud Prius owner. |

Friends: 0 | I think you can sell it yourself for close to what you paid, unless your state charges sales tax on private used car sales...As for $2.00 gas, the NW has not seen that since way before it was over $4.00 and I don't expect to again unless we have a depression (no I am not an economist just a finance major : ). I would rather get out of the recession and see $3.00 gas stay! Finally, if you want performance push the power button. Just kidding - still not a sports car but I love the smooth ride - almost like what I would imagine if I was a light rail driver. Now when I get in my 08 CRV, I feel like I am in a truck and the Pruis feels like a sport car handling wise. What a difference a week makes. |
