Default $65 for oil change? am I being ripped off?

2010 owners - pl confirm this

I just pulled in for the first 5K oil change; she wrote me up for 29.95 as usual

I then mentioned that they need to use the OW20 (I read on this forum) oil since this is 2010 model; she then modified the price for $65..since it is synthetic oil....

$65 for just an an oil change...can this be true

Well...yeah.

The $29.99 is for the dino-oil change. 5 quarts of synthetic oil will cost more than that...just the oil. 5 quarts of Mobil-1 Synthetic costs me $35 or so when I buy it for my oil changes. and yes...I know the car doesn't hold quite 5 but they still have to open 5 quarts so you're going to get billed for 5 quarts.

I don't know if I'm reading your response incorrectly, but you seem to say that you buy your synthetic oil and then bring it to your dealer to have them do it for you? If so, I'm surprised your dealer would allow you to do that.

I think it is just a touch high. But I believe most of us who go to the dealer will be paying 55-65.

I know there was another thread or several on this a month or two ago.

Thanks--I'm combing through this site to find more information about this, and I'm not adverse to the idea, especially if the oil change intervals are longer than with regular dino oil--now I'm just wondering if Toyota Canada will endorse this as well.

OK, so that's an additional $7.00 @ quart, assuming they will charge your for five quarts. That seems a bit on the high side to me; that's seven bucks in addition to the price per quart of dino oil. They need to get real!

But if you're not comparing the initial estimate to the new one, then the price is in range. My dealer wanted $90.00 for the first 5K service... and that's why I won't be having my servicing done there!

My dealership charges 79.99 for the 0w20 Oil change w/ filter, etc... They also told me that if I bring it in, and supply my own own oil, they will so it all for only $20, which covers their filter, and labor. (and is $10 off the cost of the Dino Oil Change).

Seeing as I can buy the 0w20 at Walmart for $22.00 for a 4 quart bottle, and $8 for a single quart, then my spending $30 on oil, and $20 on installing it, stills seems a good deal as compared to the 79.99 they wanted from me the first time (which caught me by surprise).

Keep in mind - whatever price should also include tire rotation !!! One local dealer has specials (synthetic extra) - $29 for oil change, $75 for 5K (which is really just oil+tires)

No, most dealers in the midwest charge in the range of $80 for this oil change, and another $25 for the tire rotation. Many offer a 5k service for $99.99 which includes both, and a few other inspections.

While some dealers may have a great deal, based on some horror reports I have read on this blog, I would imagine that some shops are not using the oil required by our cars.

In my case, I found a local tire shop to do my rotations for me, for only $5.

I took Amsoil to my dealer back when I was still going there occasionally and never had an issue. Discount was minimal but I WANTED to use that oil.

Lately I take Mobil 1 with me to Pope-Davis around the corner, and pay $20.99 or so for the change and tire rotation. So I guess I'm at $43 or so, but the rotation alone is listed at $19 so I'm OK with the cost...
