Bear in mind also that you can turn off voice prompting once you're familiar with the system (in SETUP->VOICE). I think you can skip most, if not all, submenus and go straight to what you want in all voice functions (use the command list selection when not moving to review the various commands possible).

I won't ever recommend the Nav and will do my best to let Toyota know how poor their product is.
Lock outs can always be defeated..... There's a separate thread on this - I am surprised the NAV backdoors (pressing certain portions of the screen at certain times ) are not still there (or we don't know)...

Look to others to undo your *problem*. I just looked on our Lexus NAV and the software backdoor was removed in subsequent releases. Hence if I upgrade our Lexus NAV, I lose the ability to press sneaky buttons, and bypass the whole mess...

Toy decided they don't want that ability (corporate responsibility comes to mind), so it is what it is............ That's what mods are all about

I know our GX has the backdoor, and for the passenger(s), she can watch "Charmed", while I drive the 5 hours to ski... No temptation there to look at the screen from me - I did pull the dash apart for the DVD mod...

I had a similar issue with lockout while driving in 2004 Nissan Murano. Found the location of one wire from GPS to NAV. Cut the wire and installed a switch. Has anyone looked for a similar solution in Prius.

Found this on YouTube
Hidden service menu. Other than the mic volume I don't know what else you can do with it.

Interesting take on this. I already know all the roads where I live so why would I need GPS for that. I bought the Nuvi for those times when I boldly go where I have not gone before.

Personally, I have had very good luck with the Voice Commands on my V.

I know Nissan has a function with their voice command where you can train it to better understand accents or colloquial variations in pronunciation. Is there such a function with Toyota?
