Default Buying in Tax Free State

After buying my car and seeing the $2300 in TAX! I paid, I wondered if you buy the car in a tax free state, could you get away with not paying the tax? In Massachusetts when I transfered an out of state registration there, you had to show proof of the tax you paid when you bought the car. If it was less, you had to pay the difference to the MA 5% rate. When I re-registed the car in IL, they had originally issued the title and the transfer was simple. I never found if they had a similar rule.

I know on your state income tax filing you're expected to pay for all out of state purchases you didn't pay sales tax on already, and of course everyone does. A car is a lot harder to hide than new clothes, thou.

This would have been a better thought before I bought the car

I bought my car in WY which is about as tax free a state as there is. In order to obtain IL plates the WY dealership had to send documentation to IL Sec of State. In a nutshell, if you want IL plates it looks like one either pays a tax at point of purchase or one pays IL. I paid $1800 in IL tax.

Hey, take it easy, there's an upside.
It's almost April 15th. You'll be getting some of those taxes back. :-)
