After a lot of research we finally bought a black Prius iTech in Sydney last weekend. (I know, it’s a hobby not a colour…)
We originally planned to buy the base model but once I played with the itech’s gadgets, that was that…
We started looking at 2nd hand iTechs and found several 2005 or 06 models online with around 10,000km in the low $A40,000s… We also found a few brand new 2006s interstate for around $A45,000-46,000 (drive-away), with help from a very kind, well-connected soul. (I doubt I would have gotten the same price myself).
We went to a few Sydney dealers looking to compare prices on a 2007. We quoted the above prices and after some bargaining, agreed on $A47,500 (drive-away) plus $100 for tinted windows, delivered next week. (We didn’t bargain on the base model but the salesman seemed prepared to go to around $A37,500 without too much trouble).
I feel pretty happy with this price, so this may be a dumb question to ask after already signing the cheque… but I can’t help but wonder how other buyers of new Priuses – base or iTechs – have fared with their bargaining?
I’m not a very aggressive negotiator… I think maybe we could have got down another $500-1000 or so if we threatened to walk out.
How did you guys fare?

As mentioned above, I can still organise a new 2006 I-Tech for A$45500; 2006 Base for A$35000; or a new 2007 I-Tech for A$46000; 2007 Base for A$36000. All drive-away in Brisbane for anyone who wants one. Limited colours on the 2006 cars though.
Glad to help anyone to get a Prius at the best price! PM me if interested.

Cheers,
John.
