seems from these pictures and others that toyota may want to re-evaluate the extremely thin panels they use to save weight

ya maybe but those thin panels could have prevented the cars from locking together and making the accident much worse. plus i think the lack of impact and the angle of impact would have done similiar damage to most cars.

Having had an accident with a larger Toyota vehicle (Tacoma double cab) I am willing to defer to the engineers there. The cars may look bad afterward but minimizing damage to the inhabitants is way more important than the outside appearance. Breakaway technology is life saving for both parties involved.

Just because it's thin, doesn't make it weak. You think a BMW is any better? I saw an old (mid 90s) BMW 3 series involved in a bumper-to-bumper accident (couldn't have been travelling more than 10km/h). He hit the Camaro in front and his hood crumpled. The Camaro on the other hand suffered next to no damage in the rear bumper and only a scratch on the hood where it hit the bike rack of the Jeep in front.

Anyway, Dave it looks bad but it's mostly panels that can be replaced. Note the doors are a hefty price and they're replaceable. I'm not sure about the fender since we never had to repair a fender on our cars before.

Hope you're back on the road asap and trouble-free!

haha. oh man, don't remind of the time we got a Cav as a courtesy car. That was the worst one ever.

Well, there are ways to make the other party pay more. For example, instead of repairing the door panels, you could insist on ordering brand new ones from Japan. My dad did that once with our 1 month old Corolla back in 99. He was pissed that a Jeep Grand Cherokee driver talking on a cellphone backed into him after refuelling (my dad was waiting in line). So my dad asked for a brand new hood. The grille and headlights were fine. Who knew a Corolla hood cost $2,000?

Who are you renting from?

I was stuck with a Pontiac Sunbird for one day. I've rented the Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla, 2006 Hyundai Sonata, Mazda 6, and Toyota Camry from Hertz. Those are all nice cars. In many states, their insurance is liable for a replacement vehicle rental and cannot restrict which company you use. If this rental company can't give you a car you like, you might even be able to get another rental company with the car you want to bill the insurance company directly.

actually dealing with MY insurance co. was a breeze. had my adjuster call to start a tape recorded interview. said it would take about 20-25 mins. i just mentioned off hand that the other insurance company had already accepted liability and my guy said "ok, saves me a trip, have a nice day" and was gone in less than 60 seconds...
