I just accelerate slowly, P&G routinely, speed limit. Nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, the current tank I have going right now is 59.7 mpg. I have had the car since March, so I've had a little practice watching the MFD and being aware of where the power is going. On my first tank I averaged around 50, so I think there is definitely a learning curve. Let me know if that helps.
