Default Back Up Sensor Question

Hi Guys, Still awaiting for my 2009. In the meantime, I'm considering getting the Back Up sensor.

My dealer quoted $400. I see aftermarket ones for $49 and you install it yourself. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Not being up with what options are available for the 2009 Prius, I haven't heard that Toyota is making back-up sensors an option. If they are, GREAT . . . I wish mine had them. But if it is just something the dealer will tack onto the car, I'd think twice about it being very overpriced.

Also, don't buy the extended warranty from the dealer. Check on this site for extended warranties. You have until the basic warranty expires to make that choice. You can save major bucks elsewhere.

Every Toyota Servco bought here in Hawaii is offered the option of the Back Up Sensors. I thought I let the dealer do it because it's a Prius and I didnt want to mess anything up and risk getting shocked.

The warranty that Servco offers allows you to get 100% of your money back if you dont use it in that time period. I thought that was a pretty good idea. Although I did see the one offered here being about a third of the price.

Unless your present vehicle has a reverse sensor and you are used to having it, I don't think you need or will miss it. A lot of the reverse sensors I have seen do not warn you until you are almost on top of the object and depending on your speed, it may be too late at that time to stop.

As for the Servco warranty, I did get it as I don't believe the Toyota warranty offered here is valid in Hawaii. You can check with Troy about this as you still have time before you get your Prius.

Doesn't your car have the back up camera? I would find it more useful than a backup sensor, though I hardly ever look at the screen, now that the novelty has worn off. Handy, if you use it though.

One thing you need to get out of your head is the easy chance of electrocution with the Prius. It's one of those enduring myths which, like most myths, isn't true. Since I've had my 2008 I've installed new horns and XM radio. I'm still alive. Others here do much more extensive work on the electrical system. (Remember, the hybrid batteries separate from the 12v system.) You probably could injure yourself if you were very deliberate about it, but I've never found anything about anyone being killed or injured by the Prius electrical system.
