Default Option Packages??

I put in an order for a silver #7 back in March and was told 6-8 months for delivery. A few weeks later I called to confirm I was really on the list. I was told I was, but my option package was changing from a #7 to a #5. I protested and was told that Toyota was making the change since they were limiting the choice of option packages. It didn't make any sense to me but I was told to wait a few weeks to see if Toyota actually changed the order. I was also told #9 would not be available either.

Today I was informed that my order went in for a #5 option package. I really don't want a # 5 - I want either a #7 or #9. So I called some other dealers in the area. One said they were not taking any new orders at all but the option packages in this area were 1,4,7,8,9. A second dealer said I could put in an order for a 4, 7 or 9. A third dealer said they could only take order for 2005 models and for option packages 1 - 8 (no #9). They estimate a 9-12 month wait. None of these dealers had heard of anything like what I was told by the first dealership.

So, does anyone have any idea what my dealership is doing? They told me I could either stay on the list or get my deposit back. I am tempted to stay on the list rather than start all over but getting a #7 or 9 is important to me. Thoughts? Advice?

I'm in Virginia too, and have been quoted with 4, 7, and 9, as being the packages with greatest chance of delivery (i.e. highest number of production). This seems to be consistent with other posts on this forum.
So unless you like this particular dealer more than another one for some reason, I would take my deposit elsewhere-- a 6-8 month timeframe is a typical estimate. And if you're willing to travel to a more rural area, you might find a shorter waitlist.

Good luck!

Your dealer screwed up somehow, and passed the damage on to you. Your only options are buy it or cancel, really.

I wanted a #7 myself, but I was told that they didn't exist at the time (only 3, 5, 9), so I went with a #3 and ended up with a 5. It's not too bad The SE/SS would be nice, but that's really just a bonus feature. The headlights would be nicer, but life goes on nonetheless.

I'd say if you want the car and aren't firmly attached to the idea of getting the headlights, just get it. Yes, you got a screwed over a little, but at least you'll have the car.

Hmm.. wait. The car isn't here yet at all? If you still have a LONG wait on the list, then I'd say screw 'em. If this moved you up the list in some way, it's worth it to grab the available #5 and run (which is what I did).

I started out wanting a 5, but it didn't look like that was a real high seller and Toyota didn't offer many, so I went with a 7. Seriously, you cannot live without the SS/SE. Okay, you can, but it's not worth it. I can add a changer later, but I've had my car two months and still can't believe I've never used a key.

If you want a 7, tell the dealership to climb a tree. You asked for something specific, and they took it upon themselves to tell you what you would be getting instead, but only when you asked, without having the courtesy to contact you and offer you the chance to back out since they wouldn't have what you wanted. And they clearly don't seem too sure of what they're going to be getting anyway. If you've got a deposit in, get it back. If it's a free list, stay on it with the off chance that you'll get your 7. But get on some other lists too.
