After months of rumors and rumblings, Toyota has released photos of its small sports car collaboration with Subaru, the Toyota FT-86 Concept. What follows is a very exciting concept from the world's most boring car company.
The FT-86 is a compact 2+2 that seeks to recapture the spirit of the 1980s AE86 Corolla GT-S (better known as the Hachiroku) of drifting fame. While most of the details are still mostly shrouded in mystery, we've got a little bit of meaty info. Under the hood, we should find a variant of Subaru's 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine sending 200-250 horsepower through a six-speed manual transmission (thank you!) and onward to the rear wheels.

Can I get one with the Prius drive train in it so that there's some hope of getting decent fuel economy? Having a Subaru WRX with a 2.0l turbo that makes 200hp+, it's very thirsty. City driving is 20-22mpg and highway is 26+. Only saw 30mpg on one tank where driving speeds were 55-60mph.

I have to say this is one car that would do better with the Honda IMA - then you could get it with a manual. 40-50mpg that's fun to drive? Sign me up! (OK, maybe not really - I really want an EV to replace my Subaru).

I have no interest whatsoever in a "Toyota" with a Subaru engine. I buy Toyota for Toyota quality. If I wanted poor design and poor fuel economy I'd simply buy a Subaru (or a Nissan ).

Yawn - my Subaru is as solid as any Toyota I've owned. And for the power it puts down, also gets similar fuel economy. In fact, the Toyota I had previously got the same fuel economy, but had much less power.

How does having a Subaru engine in it make it any less reliable? Plus, that boxer engine will actually be more beneficial to the car than any other Toyota engine and i'm sure Toyota can pour some of their expertise into make this boxer engine more fuel efficient.

Sorry - I was having a Grumpy Old Man day. That said, I've had some bad experiences with Subaru - probably just me. I do like the looks of the new coupe (nice replacement for the Celica). Like others, I'd like to see a coupe with the Prius drive train, though.
