There's a problem with some 2006 and 2007 model year Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 400h vehicles. Today, Toyota announced that it will voluntarily recall 45,500 Highlander Hybrid and 36,700 Lexus RX 400h vehicles that were sold in the States. What's the problem? Toyota says there is a control board with transistors inside the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) in the Hybrid System Inverter and that, "Certain transistors on the control boards in some of the subject vehicles were inadequately soldered and could be damaged from heat caused by a large current flow during high-load driving." Whoops.

I think this will probably make owners of the above happy since I'd heard reports of the inverters failing on them from folks here. IIRC, at least one repair expert was calling for Toyota to issue an extended warranty or recall.

One of my former coworkers who bought a HiHy new (when it was still very new) had his inverter fail on a trip from the SF Bay Area to Tahoe. Not good. Luckily it was replaced under warranty.

Great ... recall published, but parts not available until 10's of thousands of recall parts are in stock (sigh). There have been rumblings about this issue on the Lexus board for over a year. The best thing about this is that it means the folks who already suffered breakdowns/repairs will get compensated. Prior to the recall, folks out of warranty (as OUR 400h is now) simply had to take it in the shorts. Thanks cwerdna! We might not have heard about this for weeks.
