It's going to be a long time, folks, before we have an automobile that runs on something other than fossil fuels.

Most people don't seem to know this yet, but there are many clues supporting the idea that oil does not come from fossils or organic materials but instead it may be a byproduct of magma. They are finding oil as deep as 30,000 ft, far below fossils and organic materials, and they are re-opening dry wells and finding them replenished. If you really think about it, imagine an oil well having billions of gallons of oil pumped out of it... how could that much oil possibly exist in one well? It doesn't add up that a few dinosaurs and plants got crunched up into a little pocket underground and shifting plates/weight compresses and decomposes it and eventually produces billions of gallons of oil... now that's just outrageous. I believe that oil is a renewable resource, obviously it is if they are rediscovering oil in dry wells, but we still face the problem that we are using more oil than is being replenished, or at least we are using it faster than we are finding and refining it. We do need to conserve our resources any way you look at it.

Since when did choosing not to believe in reality become a viable option? You're going to need a lot more evidence than this to convince me.

Whoa, but where did this come from? Like Hyo Silver says--you will also need much more evidence than this to support this argument or convince me. My grandfather's old wells, some closed for 60 years, haven't been re-opened or "replenished" and I have yet to hear anything like this from the three practicing geologists in the family.

There have been a number of good ideas given. I would love to see your letter that you send. Heck, post it here prior to publication and I am sure a number of us would provide constructive feedback to make it even better.

Cheers

MPG is only one aspect of a car. Other than that, an large SUV outperforms a Prius in almost everything else. [/b]
Parking?

Handling?

Braking?

Allowing others to see around you to predict traffic flow?

You may very well own the world's only SUV that does everything but gas mileage better than a compact sedan.

The problem with the market is that it's very short sighted. It can't anticipate shortages well with out bedlam breaking out. The role of society and gov't is to forsee these sorts of issues (peak oil, for example) and to then take steps to mitigate the problem and develop alternatives. Once the alternatives have a toe hold you're right, the market can then drive things. [/b]
Indeed! The "Market" is only reactive. Being reactive this time (as usual) is going to hurt a lot more than being proactive!

I'd have to concur that replying to something like that is pointless. I agree with him that American citizens have the legal and moral right to drive whatever they want. The best you could do is point out that along with that right comes the responsibility of dealing with the consequences - be they higher gas prices, more pollution, global warming, endless foreign wars, or whatever. The problem is, the sort of person who really wants to believe that a Hummer is a good vehicle choice isn't going to listen.
[/b]
I too feel that everybody should be able to drive whatever they please - IF and ONLY IF they also pay for it. And I don't mean buy the car and pay for the gas at the pump. I mean pay for all the damage that is done by their choice of vehicle. But we have no way of charging people like that, so what are we to do? Assume that the affodability of the price of the vehicle and the price of the gas is a valid measurement of entitlement?
