Toyota Announces Prius "Eco-Nomic Savings Bonus" Incentives Up to $2,000

"April 4, 2007 – Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today announced new "ECO-nomic savings bonus" incentives on 2007 Toyota Prius resulting in savings of as much as $2,000 on certain options packages.

"For more than three years, consumers shopping Prius found short supplies and premium pricing," said Jim Farley, group vice president, Toyota marketing. "Last Fall, we increased production by 50 percent, ensuring an ample supply. Beginning in mid-January, we added mild price incentives. The added supply and lower prices have attracted a whole new segment of mainstream buyers, resulting in all-time record-breaking sales in February and March. We think the Eco-nomic savings bonus will be even more successful in bringing hybrid technology to a broader range of mainstream buyers."

In February and March, Toyota offered mild financing and lease incentives on Prius, resulting in robust sales increases of 86.8 percent and 133.2 percent respectively, over the previous year, both all-time records.

With combined sales of 169,797 units in 2006, and 57,162 units through the first quarter of 2007, the Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid are the industry’s three top-selling hybrid models. In calendar year 2007, combined sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrids will exceed a quarter million units.

Effective April 3, 2007, Prius customers will receive discounts on available factory-installed option packages, except the base and Package #1 (HE) models.

Discounts on pricing for factory-installed option packages range from $600 to $2,000. Each package in the program offers safety features such as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), backup camera, Smart Key system and audio system with MP3 capability and auxiliary port.

Packages for Touring Edition are comprised of HID headlamps, backup camera, Smart Key system, JBL® Premium sound system with nine speakers, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth®, VSC, security alarm, HomeLink®, navigation system, and leather steering wheel and seats."

Dang it! I saw this and got excited about getting a 2nd Prius.

But I don't want Navigation, back up camera, VSC, leather steering wheel, butt massager, etc.
I want a package 1 "ECO"nomic incentive.
This does nothing for me!
I guess I'll keep waiting for a deal that applies to me (or the PHEV I really want).

Car models are like taxes, they only get bigger and fancier over time and cannot get cheaper and more efficient.

I just got a 2007 package 1 at the end of last month for $1,800 under MSRP (and $300 under dealer invoice) and 0% financing for 24 months. Ultimately even with these "incentives", they must have a certain double-secret bottom price that they can't go below. I don't know if it really means much when they offer an "incentive", other than maybe getting more people in the door. Sure I had to haggle a little to get my price, but it was done mostly over email and in the end it wasn't too painful of a process considering the cost savings. Basically what I'm saying is that if the idea of $2000 off a Package 1 got you excited in comparison to MSRP, you can probably do nearly as well by negotiating. Good luck!

And Package 1 includes the backup camera (which is nice given the limited view out the back), but none of the other things you mentioned that you don't need.

You're not going to get a $2000 discount on package 1. The lower the package, the lower the discount. There's more profit in the higher packages so a larger discount can be offered. If you can get the same negotiated price and the discount this sounds like a great time to buy.

Toyota must have a glut of that package sitting on dealers lots. Up tp $2000 rebate? That is huge for the Toyota Prius. It will be interesting to see how big toyota's rebates get in the coming months.

This is nothing that great. Just about all of the dealers I called last week were selling any package for $2,500 under invoice. The tax credit was $800 more last week too. Do they still have the 0% for 24 months like they did the last couple months?

I haven't had mine even a week yet and suddenly I am an expert, so forgive me.

We have several dealerships in town. We went to one on the last day of the month (3/31). They were ready to make a deal. (The last day of the month is the last chance a salesman has to make his quota, so he was ready to wheeler-dealer with us.) My husband is a salesman, so he has an advantage when dealing with other salesmen in that he can see through the tricks and understands how they are motivated. He got nearly $3,000 off of their price and got them to include taxes, title and tags in that price. The key was when they wouldn't come down to our price, we got up to leave. Very politely. We were always friendly adn nice, as were they. We thanked them for all they had done and told them we might be back, but we needed to go see what the other dealerships might have to offer us.

They were not letting us out of the door. They would do anything to keep us from leaving. We got a great deal and didn't have to waste time driving to other dealerships.

These new incentives are great, but I'm sure you can negotiate even more on top of them. The last day of the month is a great time to buy. Just be willing to walk away if you don't get what you want. There's always tomorrow. If you have it in you to walk away, you are bargaining from a stronger position.

(This falls under the category of things I have learned but have trouble doing..... Hope my preaching is not offensive.)

Where do the new Prius owners, with the #6 package, that purchased their Prius prior to this April 4, 2007, fit in, to have some benifit from this new ECO-nomic savings bonus? Will we be held out to receive none of the benifit?
