Friends: 0 | I certainly don't see this thread as racist as Chinese (government, area of origin) products have had safety issues largely reported in the news of late. I don't think OP was saying "Would you buy a car by those [insert racist comment regarding chinese people here] Chinese cars?" but more "would you buy a car made in a country with a heavy record of safety issues?" My answer - I'm trying to avoid Chinese made goods and foods as well. The safety record is abysmal and I'm not so into encouraging workers by murdering those in charge (of their FDA) when the bad news hits the presses.

Friends: 0 | Well, if the crash didn't kill you, the exploding batteries might. Then again, if you were really lucky, you'd just go crazy from the lead paint. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Papaya Mom @ Aug 13 2007, 05:16 PM) </div> Quote:
The Chinese are just going through the same growing pains as the Japanese and the Koreans did/are. The only way to counter the bad press is to improve your product. Now, how that is done under a communist regime is another story....

As robincx pointed out, Japan was synonymous with crap about 50 years ago. They obviously corrected that. Now Japan is synonymous with quality and precision engineering.... and food eating contests!

Friends: 0 | My wife and I avoid all Chinese foods when we are able to see the country of origin - Product of China - is a warning sign. No, we would not buy a Chinese car, nor would we buy a Korean car. We're Toyota customers for life and not ashamed of it. |

Perhaps you missed the recent news on the string of toxic and defective items produced by China. Toothpaste, medicine, pet food, baby food. They have no safeguards or inspections. You'd take your life in your hands due to shoddy materials, construction, etc. I'm with Pinto Girl. I'd try to avoid buying anything made in China until they get their house in order.

Thirty-some years ago, my Mom wanted a Honda (but my Dad made her buy a Ford)...the CVCC stratified charge engine was already on the scene (don't forget the 240z, either)...by 1976, Japanese cars were already coming on strong. Where I lived, it was already apparent that Japanese cars were well made, and that the quality issues had been solved...it was primarily the xenophobes who were afraid to buy one, in my opinion. At this point, with Chinese products, I'd say they've got a bit more refinement to do...still at the 'Toyopet' stage.

Friends: 0 | If the Chinese car was as safe as the Prius, I would buy one. I think the competition is good. As the article said, the automakers stopped making EV's 'AS SOON' as california got rid of the EV requirement. Now the automakers are seeing that if they don't make the electric cars, someone will beat them to the punch. If the new cars (From China or wherever) get good ratings with NHTSA I wouldn't have a problem buying them. If there were 2 similar cars, I would choose American first, even if it were a little more expensive. But if the American companies won't make the car that I want, I would buy elsewhere. -Peter B |

If you meant it by "race", then I disagree. Singaporeans, Taiwanese are "Chinese" by race, but their products are pretty good nowaday. Probably slightly below Japnaese but definitely on par with Korean. Most of your LCD TV/monitors, IPod, XBos360, PS3 and GPS units are probably made in Taiwan or Korea. If you meant it by "nationality", oh yes, I won't buy a car made in China now. I don't buy food made in China either. Now, add toys to that list.
