In today's Los Angeles Times:

[excerpts]
Quote:
Fuel-sipping hybrids get a lot of hype these days, but when it comes to resale value, one study says they take a back seat to more prosaic vehicles such as the Volkswagen Rabbit and Toyota Corolla.

Not a single hybrid is among the top 10 models selected by Kelley Blue Book in its latest survey of projected resale values for cars, sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks, which is due to be released today.

German automaker Volkswagen, which doesn't sell a hybrid model in the U.S., came out tops in the annual ranking by the Irvine-based auto data firm. VW, with three vehicles in the top 10 resale rankings, displaces Honda, which comes in second this year.

Some hybrid models such as the Toyota Prius continue to be strong sellers, even in a year when overall U.S. auto sales are down.

At the same time, the rapid proliferation of hybrids has taken away some of the "scarcity premium" the cars once enjoyed on the used-car market.

"There continues to be strong interest in new and used hybrid vehicles," said Jack Nerad, a Kelley analyst. "But as more hybrid models come into the marketplace and more hybrids are available as used vehicles, we expect the market to soften some."

Kelley projects in this year's study that the Prius will retain about 42% of its original sale value after five years. That's down from about 47% in last year's study, Eckard said.

Batteries are also an issue. The first Priuses were sold in the U.S. seven years ago and some are nearing or past the 10-year or 150,000-mile factory warranty on their expensive battery packs. Buying a used hybrid and then having to spend $3,000 to $3,500 to replace the battery pack could be painful, although that hasn't persuaded Prius owner Annie Folger of Mountain View, Calif., to consider a trade-in.[/b]

I would submit that the book(let) was published before the most recent run-up in gas prices. Regular will be at $4.00/gallon by Memorial Day 2008.

I'd also speculate that there just aren't that many hybrids on the second hand market compared with the other cars.

Gee, after 5 years a used Prius has dropped from 47% to 42% of the original market value. (and a regular car is worth what after 5 years?) Thanks, but I still think I'll be way ahead.

"Projected" resale value. And lumping all hybrids together is a bit like lumping together burgers made from veggies, ground turkey, and angus.

Actually the source report's reason for not listing the Prius in their "best-in category" section is pretty funny:

Hybrid: Honda Civic Hybrid
With hybrid vehicles gaining more mainstream acceptance, the Honda Civic Hybrid's fresher, more conventional styling played a part in bumping the more recognizable Toyota Prius from our list of Best

"5 Year" resale values.

2008-2004 = 4

The 2nd Gen Prius isn't eligible for this list yet but they came up with a "Projection" to use.

I'll wait for the real numbers, kthxbai

Also, real numbers are what the used car market goes with. So, with gas prices on the march again, expect gas mizers to be in demand. When a car is in demand, guess what - its price goes up. In that circumstance, 'projections' don't really matter.

article is TOTAL CRAP.

or maybe we should ask insurance companies and how they compute resale or "replacement value"...

case in point (told many times before)

i bought a 2004 pak 1 Prius, paid $22,300 something. drove it 25 months, put nearly 30,000 miles on it. was totaled. the other insurance company paid for my rental for 3½ weeks then cut me a check for $23,509.80

how is that for resale?? btw, this happened 14 months ago when the gas was much cheaper and Priuses were waaay more plentiful

reason why Prius didnt make the resale list is easy to figure out...

THERE AINT ANYONE OUT THERE SELLING THEIRS!!

The REAL SAVINGS from not driving Corolla 657.39 +Prius= 958.18 (excludes maintenance costs...would be unfair to ICE vehicles)

I am not one to purchase new cars. I generally purchase cars that are one or two years old and save $5-10k. However, people were trying to sell the Prius for nearly a new Prius MSRP. I could not get an 04 Prius for less that $20k. Some were listd at $24k. I bought a new package #6 for 25.5k. Pruis have outstanding resale value.
