Question: Has any car ever been so hyped pre-release? I mean, even assuming the Volt comes out in 2010 doing everything promised (stop laughing and work with me here), I don't ever remember a car being this heavily hyped THREE YEARS (at least) before it's (supposedly) going on the market.

Where did they get the current engineers and what happened to the EV1 engineers?
ARRGGH!! Hearing about the Volt just really ticks me off! 40 miles on just battery power...OOOOOOOO, wow! Whooo-pee. They HAD the perfect electric car. Between the Prius and the EV1 over 50% of the car market would of been covered. Trucks & SUV's, make 'em hybrid. There's the other 50%.
In a way I wish gas was $5.00 a gallon.
But on a more positive note ... I think $4/gal. will be the tipping point, when the general public will say enough is enough. I think the 'Big Three' sense this, well, except for Chrysler, already having hybrids out now and are working to perfect them.

Got 60 mpg(avg) one evening returning home from work. Next morning back down to 48-ish. Keeping my foot out of it gets me in the mid-50's mpg

The public is probably well past the tipping point. It is the market that has not gotten there yet. It is not going to be the price of gas so much as that Tesla Motors will never get a car to the sales lot since they are all bought before that point for many years.
