Nissan Says It Will "Plug" Electric Cars In U.S. By 2010

Seems this has been mentioned before, but this time it seems the announcement is official.

Maybe someone will make a move entitled "Who Brought the Electric Car Back from the Dead".

The Nissan Motor Company plans to sell an electric car in the United States and Japan by 2010, raising the stakes in the race to develop environmentally friendly vehicles.

The commitment — expected to be announced Tuesday by Nissan’s chief executive, Carlos Ghosn — will be the first by a major automaker to bring a zero-emission vehicle to the American market. Nissan also expects to sell a lineup of electric vehicles globally by 2012.

It may just be the first Nissan I've ever owned.

Mr. Ghosn declined to disclose details of the electric products and said initial quantities would be small. “We’re talking about hundreds of vehicles first,” he said.


But he said that the company was determined to achieve “zero-emission-vehicle leadership.”

So it might be a few more years before we can actually get our hands on it. But I am greatly encouraged because this seems to be the first time a major car maker has committed publicly to this.

And while Nissan may not be as good as Toyota, it's not a garbage-car company like Ford or GM.

• Did they 'borrow' the front end design from Mitsubishi?

Didn't Nissan license the HSD from Toyota for their Hybrids? I thought that was the case, and if so, this might hint at the availability of plugins from Toyota.
