Gas vs. Diesel vs. Hybrid Power

This appeared on MSN's front page, usual stuff about hybrids, ie, not expected gas mileage, more expensive than regular gas engines cancelling gas savings, batteries are $3000, they will only last 8-10 years, hurting resale value, batteries may pollute, cars should be serviced at dealer, emergency workers could get injured by high voltage. Just didn't see it on here, thought I'd post it.

All in all, it was a pretty fair article. They didn't say batteries may pollute... they just said some people claimed they would, and others wouldn't. Likewise, they said if battery prices hold at their current levels, it would hurt resale prices. Personally, I think as more and more hybrids hit the road, the prices will come down.

I did like them throwing the Passat TDI in there. That is a sweet car. I wish Toyota could take a page from VW in interior design and incorporate some VWish elements. Toyota makes fine cars, but their interiors are vaugely Buickish.

i found so many things to object to in that article that i won't list them here, other than to say that, between contradictory statements and inaccuracies, i didn't think the article was worth the time it took to read it. ukeright: (imnsho)

by the way, when Ann wrote "On-road testing by Popular Mechanics magazine—comparing a Civic Hybrid with a higher-priced, uplevel Civic EX—showed a similar result. Magazine officials took the cars on a cross-country run and concluded the Hybrid saved about a penny a gallon in fuel costs. ", can we say that she probably meant

"...saved about a penny a mile..."? :P
