Back when I was in high school, I was hit by an old man while walking across a crosswalk (he was making a right turn, and going about 20mph, and hit me from behind). I ended up on top of his hood and when his car came to a stop, I flew forward (not too fast at all) back onto my feet. I had no injuries. A nearby policeman stopped and later told me the man was 90 years old and he told him to go get an eye exam. Anyhow, I guess I've never really though of this before, but based on physics, if a Civic, Corolla, Camry, etc hits a pedestrian, the pedestrian's center of mass is above the hood; so the pedestrian will almost never be run over. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

(so, how in the heck to SUVs get around pedestrian crash safety requirements???)

Jayman...nice vehcle choices. I suspect that you might "understand more" than some folks here and some of the SUV crowd.

Each vehicle has its purpose, and the Prius gets used at least 90% of the time

I have remote property that is right at the end of a 4.5 km gravel sideroad. It could get iffy in winter, but what finally clinched it was a logger got a contract on Crown Land to harvest some mature timber. The gravel sideroad is an absolute disaster right now, and will likely stay that way for the next 2-3 years

I got a good deal on the FJ, and drive is sensibly. That is, I actually use winter tires in winter, even though it's a 4wd. I currently have studless winter tires, and have preordered Nokian factory studded winter tires for next winter

So I'm a bit of a rebel. I have a Prius and I have an FJ. There is a lot of misinformation out there on both vehicles. For example, although I personally have not experienced windishield cracks or fender bulges/rips on my FJ, I have seen FJ's with this problem. Most of them are highway drivers, too

I also run Ubuntu on the computer I use for internet access. So I have experience with all the flavors of Windows, but for personal use run a Debian based OS
