The author of this article poses an interesting concept: Keeping the "MPG" for historic purposes. Children in future generations may ask their parents "why do we say MPG?." It's an interesting idea.

There's the term "GGE", gallons of gas equivalent, often used
to boil various different types of energy consumption down to
a common reference frame. When you have events involving gas,
diesel, natural gas, electric, wood chips, and who knows what
else like Tour de Sol used to be, you have some really interesting
issues trying to work up energy-used scoring.
