Toyota to Use Zip Ties to Fix Floor Mats - U.S. News Rankings and Reviews

Automotive News reports, "Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is instructing dealers to attach floor mats to seat frames on the driver's side of select vehicles with self-locking wire ties to prevent the mats from snagging on gas pedals and causing unintended acceleration."

Toyota spokesman Brian Lyon told Automotive News that the decision to use zip ties to secure the mats was made in consultation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "We have reviewed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration what we're calling a semipermanent floor mat installation process, and we're providing these instructions to our dealers," Lyons told Automotive news. "This allows dealers to continue selling and delivering both new and used vehicles."

LOL... duct tape fixes everything! I like this idea more than the zip ties.

See, I like the zip tie idea as opposed to something stupid and expensive. Remember automatic seat belts and 5 MPH bumpers?
Of course I don't think I am stupid enough to let a floor mat kill me either.
You clean them by cutting the zip ties, how else? Replace said zip ties when done, available almost anywhere
Zip ties are KISS, and therefore in my opinion, not stupid

Sorry to veer away from the topic, but ... What was wrong with 5mph bumper?
My old '98 BMW had 9mph bumper.
It stayed in tact while the other guy's fell off.

That's where the semi-permanent part comes in.

Too funny. I did this for many years on my 88 CRX, which had no factory installed anchor hooks, and yes, cut them and replace to clean the mats.

I used white zip ties in my wife's Prius 2005 – it totally works. I used scissors to puncture the mat and the carpet underneath, and then tied the mat to the floor - there is no way the mat comes off now unless the ties are cut. (I did this a number of weeks ago after seeing scary info on the web about this issue).

You can buy about 600 of those zip ties for about $3.00, think of it as disposable safety and clean away.
