i was wondering, what insurance companies have had the best deals on insurance rates? i realize rates very greatly from area to area, let alone person to person but getting a general idea of better priced rates would help out alot!

ive noticed allstate seems to be the highest so far, but have been struggling to find a lowest and any help would be appreaciated, thanks!

Farmers insurance in CA offers a 5% discount to Hybrids. I know you're in Mi, but maybe you could use the info as a bargaining tool.

My wife and I have State Farm - they SUCK. I'm the perfect 36 y/o driver, and my rates went UP $12/mo, going from a convertible 2dr V6 sports car with only front airbags to a 4dr V4 hybrid with advanced airbags all around. You know what the agent's secretary said? "It must be higher because it costs so much to repair those hybrid cars"

Maybe it went up because you are now driving a NEW vehicle that would cost ~$24K to replace if it got totalled tomorrow rather than an OLD one that had lost a lot of value?

Just guessing.

you're right, of course, and I knew that... Just wanted to point out the secretary's ignorance - never did like her much...

Still sucks though!

I have State Farm also. Not a big fan but my insurance did go down when switching from my 2002 Montero Sport to my 2006 Prius even though the current value of the Prius was 2x that of the Montero.

I went from driving a 94 Toyota Tercel to an 05 Toyota Prius and my rates doubled from $35 per month to $70 per month. (I added collision/comp to the new policy). So now I pay $840 a year - I have friends who pay out nearly that much for car insurance per month so I am not complaining!

I have State Farm and I actually asked if that was all I would be paying considering I was going from a car valued at $1500 to one that cost $26K.

When I bought my Tercel in 94 it cost $13K and the insurance with collision/comprehensive cost me $1000 per year. Twelve years later I buy a Prius for $26K and it cost me $840 per year for the same type of coverage - so I guess you could say my rates for the same type of coverage dropped by nearly 20%!

I found that Progressive and Geico pretty much had the same price... I was disappointed that Traveller's, even with the 10% discount, was higher than both. Shop around.

When I traded my 2001 Honda Insight for my 2005 Prius, my
insurance, already at a fantastic rate, (clear record)
only increased $4.35. That's SAFECO. I did make sure my
agent listed the fact that I had vin numbers etched on every
glass, and that I had front, side and rear side airbags, and
that they understood smart key.
Still, I was amazed at the the price, and, it stuck, no follow-up
letter of increase since Nov. on my six month rate. I would have
thought the collision coverage would have increased but it
didn't. Still maintained 500 deductable, and 100 deductable on
comp. 489.93 for six months with my POS old truck added to
the liability portion.

I have State Farm, I have had pretty good service from them. However, fortunately, I don't really use my insurance very much. But the local agent is very good which is most likely why I like the company. I have checked the rates and State Farm, for me living where I do, is about the same as other large companies with agents. Having a local agent really helped me when the "big hail storm" went through here about 12 years ago. I had about $15,000 of damage to buildings and one vehicle and they came through with no problems, thanks in part to my agent and in part to the company rep that was here.

My previous car was a '98 Accord EX V6. The insurance on my '05 Prius is about 1% or 2% less than it was on the old Honda even though the Prius is valued at about 3 times as much.

I was pleasantly surprised, my agent said it was because the Prius has a lot of safety features that the Honda did not have. Features such as side airbags and VSC, the Honda did have ABS as of course the Prius does.
