Hey guys and gals, my name is Tim Baker and I am currently waitiong on a white 06 prius in package #8 trim.. Just curious on where and how you go about applying for the hov stickers. I assume this only lets you use the lane or does it count at toll booths say on the bridges that allow carpoolers thru free at peak times? That would be too much to hope for. Golden gate bridge has 5 dollar toll. But I can aski

You'll need your VIN to apply, so you can't do so till you have the car. The DMV will hold the application till the ownership paperwork comes through saying you're now the registered owner.

I don't think you get any break on bridge tolls, but I could be wrong.

You also need your License Plate Number, otherwise you will get a form back like the one attached here that I just received today. <sigh>

Foo -

Did you actually send in your VIN number. Most folks I know (including me!) applied with just the VIN, and no license plate number. Stickers arrived with no hassle.

Tim -

Yes, you are still on the hook for bridge tolls in the Bay Area, but you get to go through the HOV/carpool lanes on the bridges so that at least saves you some time if not actual money. That said, I know that at least the Bay Bridge doesn' t seem to be charging the hybrid transponders.

Yes, I sent the VIN. You can see the handwritten note that says they require the "license plate and registration". Thankfully the plates arrived today at the dealer and I can pick them up tomorrow and try again..

No one in this message thread has yet pointed out that, because your car will be registered in Marin County (or other Bay Area county), you cannot apply to DMV for Clean Air Vehicle stickers until you have obtained a hybrid-account FasTrak transponder. But by now perhaps you've read other message threads in this forum where that issue has been discussed for months on end. (This thread is a good one, but it is up to 15 pages long now, so I'd suggest reading just the latest 4 or 5 pages.)

You must submit your original FasTrak documentation to DMV along with your REG1000 application. Fortunately, you do not need your license plate number to apply for the transponder, only the VIN. But you will also need to submit to FasTrak a copy of one of two other documents to prove that you've bought a specific car that is a qualifying hybrid. (I asked my dealer to make me an extra photocopy of the temporary registration document before he folded it up and stuck it to the inside of the windshield; that is one of the two documents that FasTrak will accept.)

If you already have an ordinary FasTrak transponder, you must exchange it for a hybrid-account transponder.

See this FasTrak Web page for information about obtaining and using the hybrid-account transponder.

The combination of Clean Air Vehicle stickers and FasTrak transponder allows you to use the no-stop carpool lanes on some Bay Area bridges, but you will pay the standard price via the transponder. If you happen to be carrying enough passengers to qualify as a no-cost carpool on a given day, regardless of your Clean Air Vehicle status, then you peel your transponder off the windshield and put it into its Mylar bag so it does not get hit as you go through the toll booth area.
