Y'know, it would be really funny to find a few hundred old AA batteries, mount them in plastic holders, and put them in the storage compartment in the trunk. You could open it up and show people the batteries just to confuse them!

A simpler, and maybe better joke, would be to keep an unopened four-pack of AA batteries in your glove box, and when people make that comment, you pull out the pack and say, "No, not at all. I get around 300 miles on a package of these. Toyota wants us to buy their special ones for $25, but I just get these at Target for three bucks and they work almost as well."

YES! Nice touch with the Target thing...almost sounds plausible! And think how much fun it would be if you can get someone to believe it!

i guess you would have a kick out of the original prius or the escape hybrid with its string of D-cell sized battery pack. something like 190?? or so

each of the original D-cells was replaced by 7.2 volt cells at a ratio of 6 to 1. there is now 28 of the 7.2 volt modules. there was a voltage change in the battery pack so the original didnt have 168 but actually had 190 (i think)

I had always wondered if someone had access to an unlimited supply of D-cell batteries (and lots of time), if it would be possible to replace the cells in the battery packs of those vehicles with standard D-cell batteries and what the outcome would be.

To that end, has anyone seen or have a picture of the Escape battery pack(s)?

I don't see a problem with using D-cells other than size. You wouldn't need an unlimited supply if they were rechargable as I'm sure the prototype batteries had to have been and they are probably easier to get ahold of than the 7.2volt jobs and possibly cheaper too.
