No, by all means use it... the engine will cycle on and off to provide a minimal charge when necessary.

However, the one thing to be aware of, is if traffic suddenly starts moving, or you turn onto another street, acceleration will be pathetic as the electric engine isn't able to give it's boost.

Hmm, I remember sitting at a railway crossing (just my luck, the train decided to cross) and I had the A/C at MAX COLD and it went from 5 bars to 2 bars in no time hehe. Never seen the battery go down that quickly. The engine came on to recharge once then the train finally passed through and we could start moving.

I had a passenger in the car and not much cargo and I'd say acceleration was ok. The engine probably revved quite high but I won't hear it since the fan is running at max speed but I know what you mean. However, you rarely use the battery anyway. Every time I accelerate under normal circumstances, I'll have the battery boost for a second or two, then it's just the engine-->wheels and engine-->MG-->wheels with no arrows to/from battery.

The colors of the battery SOC bars is the same no matter what your background color is set at. That said, our minds/eyes perceive colors differently depending upon the colors around it. IOW, the pink is the same if you block out all surrounding colors, but when the background is set to blue it will appear different than when the background is set to tan.

I stand corrected. It's been a while since I changed the background colors, and my memory failed me.

The SOC color bars look green, blue and purple to me, and lately I'm seeing the purple quite often. Its been over 100 degrees here the past few days. In the morning I crack the windows and use a window shade, then keep the AC set around 80 for the ride home, but the battery still drains pretty quickly from sitting so long in the heat. It usually doesn't get back to normal until about 15 minutes later, when I hit the freeway. (The first 15 minutes from work is stop and go).

Also totally normal. I experienced that once, asked about it here, and was told not to worry.

You Prius is smarter than all of us put together.
Glad to see somebody talking about purple bars. Whenever this subject has come up before, people always talk about pink bars. I was beginning to think I had a color perception problem.

Is purple new for 2006? New for Gen II?

Purple is the new pink dear.
