Hi all,

I ordered a Prius at Manhattan Toyota back in the end of July. I signed the paperwork, give $500 credit card deposite. That's it. I haven't heard of a single word from them. This is the first time I order a brand new car from Toyota. Is that what's supposed to happen?

I called the sales and ask for an "order number", he said there's no such thing. Every time I called, he said he'd call me back, but I've never got a call from them. Tell me I'm crazy. How do you identify if a car is what I ordered?

I wasn't every happy about this.

that's a long time with no info... call them back and see what's going on. don't wait for him to call you back, if he doesn't have time, his manager does. there should be some record of your order. if they still give you trouble, take your credit card statement into the dealership.
sometimes paperwork gets lost too...

Dunno what they might do to you in Manhattan, but 'round these here parts I got an order form when I plunked down the deposit. The form described the car we wanted, and what kind of flexibility we had (anything Pkg 4 or lower, any color but black or white, a few nice-to-have options). We were told it'd take three to six months (this was on 3 June). I gave them three weeks before I started calling and rattling the salesman's cage - he had no idea who I was the first time I called, but once I'd called three times in a week he knew who I was. When my wife called during Week Six, she was told that we had a car coming into the port the next week, with the options we wanted. Three days before it got here, we got the VIN and a printout of the options. We compared the printout with our original order (in case we forgot something) - everything was there.

Short answer - ride their butts. If the salesman doesn't call back by close of business on the same day, call and ask for the sales manager. If you can't talk to the sales manager, ask for the general manager. Time to be a hardass!!

Good luck!

You signed a buyer's order, didn't you? That describes what you bought. There's only 4 variables--price, color, package number and dealer installed accessories. When the car comes in, check those 4 things. When the car is due in is only an estimate at best. Why should the salesperson call you back--he has nothing to say until the car comes in.

You might want to call other dealers, you have until the end of September to take full advantage of the IRS kick back. The car must be in your possession, I believe.

When I ordered mine, he faxed a buyer's order to me and a reciept for the deposit, and I called just about every day to every other day for 3 weeks until I got the car.

I'm sure it depends on the dealer. Where I bought mine I put down a $500 refundable deposit to be put on the wait-list. Technically it was not an order, just a priority list, which I specified what color/package I wanted, up to 3 choices as I remember. I think I got a 3-month official estimated wait time, but the "unofficial" wait time the sales guy gave me was 4-6 weeks.

Over the next couple weeks I got about 3 phone calls that there was a Prius available that day, due to last minute change of mind by a customer. I turned down each of those as I was not ready to take delivery sooner than the unofficial 4-weeks.

Anyway, sure enough about 3 weeks in I got a call and was told my #1 choice car would be delivered in two weeks, so my total wait time was about 5 weeks and I had no less than 5 phone calls FROM the dealer during that 5 weeks. I never once had to or felt the need to call.

I guess some dealers are better communicators than others.

By the way, this was Toyota of Carlsbad (Carlsbad, CA). I went on the list mid July 2006 and took delivery late August.

Sound like you experience is normal for that dealer... check out there reviews

Hope you get your car soon, it will be worth it. I got mine from Staten Island Toyota (Manfredi Autogroup). George was my salesman and he was a straight shooter. Can came in a month earlier than promised.
