Does anyone know if there is still free parking at parking meters in the City of Los Angeles if your Prius has the HOV stickers? I checked the City of LA web site and it had conflicting information. I know the program covers the entire city of LA but not sure if they ended the program or not. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Here's the word from the LA City Council:

Hybrid program extended

With a unanimous vote from my colleagues, a program that I initiated two years ago had its lifetime extended today. Drivers of clean air vehicles like hybrids and electric cars will continue to enjoy free metered parking. The program remains in effect until 2008, when we'll have the opportunity to renew it again.

To participate in the program, you must display a California Department of Motor Vehicles Clean Air Vehicle decal. Also, keep in mind that while you don't need to fish under your seat for loose change at the meters anymore, you still have to obey posted time limits and preferential parking restrictions.

Also, tell your friends about the program—both those who are already driving hybrids and those who are thinking about buying one. With gas prices climbing, you may not even need this perk to decide that it's time to reduce your reliance on "the dinosaur" (that is, petroleum fuel). But my office has heard from several people who, once they heard about the parking privilege, decided the time was right for them to go hybrid. And the basin's air is better for it.

Alnilam's Note:

The warning to remember is that this is good only in the City of LA, not surrounding municipalities you might think are LA. Somebody said to look at the meter and see if it says "City of Los Angeles." I don't know if this is the case. I live too far south to use this good deal.

That was my question: What is considered City of Los Angeles? Does that mean L.A. County?

No, it doesn't. The City only. Others have made this very clear.

Quick forum search yields this:
http://www.laalmanac.com/LA/lamap2.htm

I'm pretty sure Santa Monica offers the same deal as well, even though it's not part of the city of LA.

Alnilam is correct. Here is a map of the Los Angeles City boundaries:

Which makes me ask:

LAX is in the City. Can one park at the airport parking meters for free? This would be a swell deal for dropping off/picking up folks.

Yes you can...However LAX has removed all the parking meters at the airport.

I seem to recall that hybrid vehicles can use the valet parking service at the self parking rates. I'll have to look it up.

P.S. Found it.

Quote:
Valet parking is available in the Central Terminal Area on the lower/arrival level across from Terminal 4. This lot is convenient to American Airlines in Terminal 4, Delta Airlines in Terminal 5 and 30 airlines in the Tom Bradley International Terminal. The cost is $38 per day or $10 per hour up to the daily rate. Alternative fuel vehicles with a state-issued sticker allowing the use of the freeway carpool lanes pay $30 day, the daily rate for all Central Terminal Area parking.

LAX - Valet Parking at Terminal 4[/b]
P.P.S. More:

Quote:
Electric Vehicle Parking

Free parking is available for electric vehicles only at charging stations located in the lower/arrivals level of Parking Structures 1 and 6. As for Clean and Natural Gas-fueled vehicles or bi-fuel vehicles, there is no free parking privilege offered to these type of vehicles in the Central Terminal Area parking structures or economy lots.

LAX - Parking Rate[/b]
In addition, from looking at the parking map, it would appear as if the valet lot is located where the metered parking spots used to be located.

Wow, great information guys. Thanks!

I also confirmed Santa Monica has free parking at city meters for Hybrids with the HOV stickers. Go LA and Santa Monica for supporting the hybrids!
