Does my wife have the dubious distinction of being the first (only) reader of this site to receive a speeding ticket in their '04 Prius? About a week ago she calls me at work and casually mentions she got a speeding ticket in our '04 Prius. She was on a six-lane, limited-access arterial where the posted limit is 45mph, but everyone drives 60mph. The cop clocked her at 67mph but wrote her up for 55. I was quite angry :x when I heard this, but she told me there were no other cars around because she had left everyone far behind at the last light. I wasn't sure if I should be relieved, or angrier. She's actually a pretty good driver, and has a CDL (commercial driver's license), which demands careful driving since many infractions are charged double points if you have a CDL. No joke, the officer actually said, "Gee, I didn't know these cars could go that fast." |

If you drive the Prius for fuel economy you're less likely to get a ticket. Still the speed limits of some roads are way too low for today's cars, so you may be speeding but still driving safely. |

My Car: Package: Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTM Awards: 0 Friends: 0 | i have to say that i have had several people ask some question like 'is it fast enough to drive on the highway' or 'what's the top speed?' (the look on their faces when i tell them it's hardware limited to 106 MPH is priceless!) i drove home all the way from WV at 76 mph... luckily this is not considered that bad on interstates where the limit is 65-70... |

Granted, if you're flying down the road +20 mph faster than the next fastest car, you're going to stick out no matter what kind of car you drive. But I'd always assumed that officers had basic assumptions built into their subconscious, like sports car = fast! and Prius = slow! Isn't a red sports car very (relatively) likely to be ticketed? |
